I've read the first volume of the manga and just found out that there's an anime adaptation. I'm thinking about watching it to hold me over until I can afford the next volume, but I want to find out how it compares to the manga first.

It's more likely that they just got lucky. As underfunded as they are, I doubt they could have outbid anybody who really wanted it.
Which is weird because Toonami is pretty underfunded right now and I would expect a show as popular as this would have lots of networks trying to get their hands on it.
