I agree, this is one of the first thoughts that popped into my head when I read the thread title. My parents never had trouble buying me M rated games because they knew I could handle it, and they knew that I knew it was just a video game. Really, it just comes down to parents not educating themselves enough about their children's hobbies and interests. Once they've done that, they could easily assess whether or not their child was responsible enough to handle the contents of the game.
