Sleeping worlds are basically worlds in a state between being devoured in darkness and not. While most worlds were returned back to normal after the events of KH1, some weren't completely revived. Those worlds are what we know as the sleeping worlds, where darkness takes a different form (hence where Dream Eaters come in, and why there aren't any Heartless or Nobodies). I could explain more, but seeing as you've still not reached far yet, I'm afraid of spoiling things for you. I will say though that watching the movie "Inception" makes understanding the whole two versions of a world thing easier to understand.
