Goldenpaw spotted a mouse standing near a bush. The golden cat dropped into a hunter's crouch and slowly crept up on the prey. In a flash, he pounced on the mouse, squeezing the life out of the small rodent. His eyes gleamed with pride he picked up his prey and walked over to his mentor. "Good job," Tawnypelt congratulated. Goldenpaw had only been an apprentice for about a moon, but his hunting skills rivaled that of a senior warrior, thanks to his amazing eyesight. The golden tom and his tortoiseshell mentor quickly dug up the prey he had caught earlier. When they entered the ShadowClan camp they dropped the prey onto the fresh-kill pile. Goldenpaw spotted another apprentice, Frostpaw, and ran over to great him. "Hey, Frostpaw!"

Goldenpaw yawned when he saw tortoiseshell pelt brush next to him. It was his mentor Tawnypelt. She gave his ear a small lick. "It's time to go out hunting," she said. "You'll need to do your duties if you want Blackstar to choose you to go to the Gathering tonight." The golden cat nodded. Goldenpaw knew that the Clan leader would choose which cat would go to the Gathering, besides the deputy and the medicine cat, who would be coming by default. The Gathering was held on an island near RiverClan territory. Originally the island was unable to be crossed without swimming, but StarClan fell a tree on the island to make a make-shift bridge many seasons ago. This was also how StarClan confirmed Onestar as the real leader of WindClan, when the tree crushed the former deputy Mudclaw when after a raid on WindClan in an attempt to kill Onestar. Tawnypelt left the den, and her apprentice followed. Goldenpelt gave a curt nod to their leader as they left camp.
