I think Xehanort gave in to the darkness... Riku just used the powers of darkness and such. And Xehanort's heartless took over Riku's body. So he was, in a way, protected from it.
Riku didn't become a heartless, nor did he get a nobody. But a heartless had tooken over his body that's all. Right?
