I know it quite well, actually. My Great-Grandparents, who were my Maternal Grandmother's parents, were Italian Immigrants who met in the United States of America (Arranged marriage). My Maternal Grandfather has the most mixed heritage. He's got lines of French, Irish, and one Mohican around Civil War times (As far as I know, there are two notable details: It was between a French descended individual and not an instance of sexual molestation, which was common to take advantage of the indigenous peoples.) My father's side is just as interesting to me. His mother can trace her lineage back to the Mayflower, as many can, but either her grandmother or her mother still had the last name of the original settlers. My father's father was descended from Canadian Catholics who were actually criminals of England who had left Scotland and were Protestants before moving. Converting was a part of losing notice, and they shortened their names, taking the "Mc" out. I carry that very name, even though my parents never married.
