I'm trying to remember back to when the game originally launched because I also preordered off of Amazon. I think they sent me my early access code on the day it was good? Or maybe it was on the shipment confirmation, I'm not sure. I definitely got into early access (theoretically, the servers were pretty overloaded but you get my meaning).
Anything that alleviates human suffering is worth looking into and discussing; some people's sufferings might be unequal, but then, I don't think there's much to be found in comparing people. If you're interested in this you should read some things about hard determinism. John Hospers in particular criticized comparing people and their situations, as it rarely helps anything and, more likely than not, only makes one of the people feel bad. For example, if you're struggling in school and I point to your brother and say "well look at him, he's suffering from depression and anxiety and he's bullied at school for being gay" then I'm only going to make you feel guilty rather than fostering a positive attitude and (say) study skills that will help you with your problem. Should we put our problems into perspective and maybe not complain so much, sure. It's not only considerate towards people with greater issues but it can help us in overcoming our own. But there's no reason to dismiss someone's struggles either. That's why I feel kinda icky about all those "first world problems" memes. If it's something like your iPhone battery not charging fast enough then yeah, suck it up, but others are legit problems even if they're not as impressive as starvation or poverty. I don't think we need to turn suffering into a pissing contest.
I'm mostly just anxious for the 11th, that's when I can upgrade my PS3 version to the PS4 one and for some reason I imagine there will be difficulties with it. That and I haven't played for some time, after seeing the different the resolution upgrade made in the PS4 beta I can't bring myself to play on the cramped 720p PS3 version. Don't click on the threads then. Please don't discourage people from posting. All of his threads have gotten replies to my knowledge so clearly people are interested.
Our server is really picky about the gifs it accepts as avatars. There's not much to be done about it nor can I figure out why it accepts some gifs and not others.
Tuesday podcast gogogo! Joined by our special guests @DigitalAtlas and @Krowley, your podcast hosts (@Misty, @libregkd, and @Llaverion) sat down to talk about mobile gaming. From handhelds to cellphones, the rise of mobile games has unquestionably diversified the gaming market both in products and consumers. Today we're seeing how the structure of mobile games -- particularly free to play models, microtransactions, and gate keeping -- has bled into console games. Yeah, it is. Gender in these games is interesting too! I vary a lot, in games like the Sims I prefer making males for some reason (I'm way more into dressing guys than girls? I don't know why), but most other games I play female.
It's actually odd! I listened to a podcast about this subject, that people have different ways of going about designing their characters. Some try to make a character that looks like themselves, others just pick a bunch of things they like and put it together (which was kinda the situation with me), and some people think up this whole backstory for their character and design them in line with that. It's so interesting. I'm lazy so I usually just select a hair style / color and then build a character off of that. This was my character for one of the betas (you had to make a new character which was then wiped after a few days), you can't see it too well because of the hat but she has pink hair:
It's an MMO so yeah, it does have a rather involved character creation.
1:20 - 2:48. I transcend.
Reaper is kind of a never ending free trial. You're supposed to buy it after using it for 30 days but it doesn't stop working after the 30 days and you don't miss out on any of the features soooo... lol. It's worth a try at least. I use it instead of Audacity. Dunno about echos with the pop filter though, I've never had the problem.
I can't imagine why heh, all I do is hook it up and record through Reaper (I find Audacity adds some static to the recordings so that might be part of it). I should also mention that I have a pop filter on my microphone. They're fairly cheap (I bought this one for $12) which helps filter out pop noises (duh) and other stuff I think. As I understand it they're not a mandatory addition but given the low price it doesn't hurt to get one.
I do believe I have manipulative tendencies, though they're often a result of already negative situations. Without going into too much detail, in a past friendship of mine (I no longer talk to this person), I was often very insecure about their level of trust and appreciation for me. Suffice to say there was fault on both sides as to why I felt that way, it was during a very unhappy period in my life, but I would often pick fights with this person to manipulate out a reaction. I wrote about it in my feelings blog (SO EXCUSE THE MELODRAMA it is my depression remedy), I'm not sure how else to articulate it: I think in the back of my mind I also knew that, when we would inevitably make up after these fights, that we would exchange some words of affection (I'm sorry to have hurt you, I care about you, etc.), and so I picked fights to manipulate those expressions out. I'm not proud of this habit and I realized, as the friendship was crumbling, that it was very unhealthy and even abusive behavior on my part. Since I have tried to recognize when I am falling into the impulse to manipulate, to question why I'm doing or saying things, and avoid exploiting people in this way. I identify quite strongly with INFJ personality types (and I get INFJ as my result in nearly every test I've taken), one of the particulars being an insight and intuition about people. I feel I have a strong sense of other people, that I can read them quite well, and that I'll often know how to draw the reaction I would like. And I don't think it's always a negative practice, like when working on a team it comes in handy, but generally speaking, I don't like the idea of utilizing others as objects. It demeans them and is quite egotistical in relationships.
Seconding Princess ♥'s recommendation for the Blue Yeti. I did a bit of research for a low-end USB microphone, wanting a new one for podcasts and game commentary, and the Yeti I found was the most recommended at that price point. I've been short on cash so I went with the Blue Snowball (same company, cheaper mic, I got mine on sale for $40 while the Yeti will run you at least $80) and I really like it. It's a weird size/shape which takes some getting used to but it sounds really nice. You can obviously hear me using it on the podcast, but that's processed through Skype so the result is lossy. I'll attach a recording off of it if you want to have a listen. I've read some comparisons of the Snowball and the Yeti, most people say that if you have the extra cash, spring for the Yeti. The size & stand is better (I'm buying a new stand for my Snowball, the one included is nothing special) and it has a built in headphone jack (which doesn't sound like a big deal but I'm kinda missing it with my Snowball). Dynamic microphones will of course get you a better result but they require some additional configuration. I'm no audiophile but I'm happy with my Snowball. I think @Ars Nova has a Yeti.
How did you like Pugilist?
Uh find a way to leave the house??? I have multiple escape routes planned from my home
ugh okay I love this generation but please do not write one of those awful "I'm so meta" essays where you **** all over the assignment or the teacher. it's a cute assignment, write something genuine!! those are the best papers
I was rarely read to as a child and I'm an English major now. I don't think upbringing is necessarily a deciding factor. I don't get to read for leisure as I would like (between other obligations and mandatory school reading, which is often novels but I don't count them) nor have I read a long list of books (at least in my opinion). Instead I obsessively re-read things. Point is, everyone has a different relationship with reading and is at a different level. I don't think it's fair to compare.
For a download of this size I just don't think a torrent is feasible, we'd need several people dedicated to seeding, not to mention that we'd occasionally have to make updates and changes to the files. I do think batch downloads are great but the zip files seem like a good solution for now.
idt servers will be a problem, the servers are shared across all platforms and while launch was a nightmare, they've sorted a lot of their issues and the load has leveled off. That and I don't imagine the PS4 launch will be nearly the volume of actual launch
very funny I am not nearly that hot
