Just as Misty said, dereps aren't that 'huge' of a punishment as, even for people with a very high reputation, they're not worth as many rep points as a +rep. I am for implementing the rep requirement again. I think 500 is a fair amount if 1000 is really too high. If 'gang dereps' occur, they can be easily found and removed.
I wouldn't mind the rep requirement being re-introduced. Even if people do start rep-whoring again, so what? To achieve premiumship, you still need to have the 1000 posts. It seems a shame that the reputation system is a little pointless at the minute.

Back when rep was first introduced, no one had that much rep (obviously), which explains why newbies seem to rise the rep ranks faster than veterans ever did - because people who give out rep are more likely to have a higher rep power. So having a large amount of rep in a short amount of time isn't as much of a big deal nowadays. I remember being excited about having 30-50 rep points and being in the top 10 most rep'd with that, lolol.
