Normal people characters don't work with every sort of story, especially with the story we're given in Sword Art. It worked in Silent Hill 2, and The Walking Dead game series, and Last of Us, and Ano Hana. What kept those characters from being bland was how they reacted to their situations, developing to make up for their flaws (well, in Silent Hill 2, what ending you get really decides how James develops.) And we still got little moments to see the characters' personalities come out. They all seemed clearly motivated by something. Motivation is what drives a plot, and plot is where events unfold that make us hope that a character will succeed, and we also learn what qualities that character has. When Sword Art meandered from getting the game finished, what was used to fill in the gaps didn't show more of the character that affected the plot. The beginning episodes of Sword Art honestly were the anime's best, because we were seeing Kirito motivated and learning about his personality, but we don't ever see more of that kind of writing until (I feel like) the last 2 episodes, when I had already been giving up on the series and didn't give a damn about the characters.
NOT BY ME
I don't expect Shakespeare (especially with anime lol.) I don't care that there's worse out there if I'm already investing time to watch something. Why I dislike Kirito is that he basically does nothing that literally anyone else would do in his place. He seems like he could have been pulled from any anime where he would have been a one-off character.

Don't even know who that is.
Saw this I think last weekend. Actually surprised how much I liked this film, but I do agree that Malekith was kinda weak with his reasoning. Though, he still was played well, along with the rest of the big players. Also, even though Loki did get a big part, the film helped me become a fan of Thor. He's a LOT more likable than in his first film, and shows a lot of emotion in this story that was clear.
Alright, I'll be ready with my 3DS whenever you are.
I think the weak story is tied with the equally weak characters. As you said, the best-written character was Suguha, but largely in part to the rest of the cast she's compared to being so cardboard-cutout generic or unlikable. Kirito's gotta be one of the most bland protagonists I've seen in anime.
Would you like anything in return? I got some Jolly Tyrunts with Dragon Dance and 3 Fang moves, as well as Adamant Gibles with Iron Head.
Aight, tell me when to get my butt online.
Add meeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Actually, there are a ton of dull anime out there.
Would today be "tomorrow"?
Having difficulties trying to figure out a good moveset for a Jolly-natured Tyrantrum to utilize that Strong Jaw ability. The moves I'm looking to pick from include: -Dragon Dance (almost guarantee that I'll have this one, need the Speed boost) -Crunch (covers Psychic/Ghost with 3 resistances, boosted by Strong Jaw to 135) -Fire Fang (covers Steel/Ice weaknesses and 2 other types, boosted by Strong Jaw to 97.5) -Ice Fang (covers Dragon/Ground weaknesses and 2 other types, boosted by Strong Jaw to 97.5) -Poison Fang (covers Fairy weakness and Grass, boosted by Strong Jaw to 75) -Stone Edge (covers Fire/Ice/Flying/Bug with 3 Resistances, boosted by Rock-typing to 150) -Head Smash (same as above, but boosted by Rock-typing to 225) -Earthquake (covers Steel weakness and 4 other types, 100 Base Power) -Dragon Claw (neutral coverage except for Steel and Fairy, boosted by Dragon-typing to 120) Right now, I'm looking at Dragon Dance/Stone Edge/Fire Fang/Crunch. Thoughts?
I think that really does depend on the individual that's trying to get into the thing that has a toxic community. Hard as it may be to disconnect fans from a show/movie/game/band/etc, it can be well worth it.
How I am with just about anything with a large community. If I let communities affect my opinion on things, I wouldn't be playing League of Legends near-daily. Hell, I wouldn't be on this forum.
Man, as easy as it is for me to jump on that kind of displeasure with those kinds of fans, I'm just glad in general that people like good manga or anime at all. I do get your point, but I prefer a more positive reaction. Meh :|
Sorry, some people like myself just happen to prefer anime to manga.
