The main reason i think axel sacrificed himself is because that at the end, he said that sora made him feel the same way that he did with roxas, so he might have wanted to showoff and didn't know he would kill himself, or he would have killed himself because he was already a traitor to the Organization XII, so he would have died anyways, and just saving sora a bunch of trouble fighting the dusks. Also, he needed to thank sora, and say sorry to him for taking kiari, and how much trouble the Organization gave him...
