Guard works for everyone, it'll cause them to do a different normal attack by pressing Square. ^^That's how you get to use Auron's "Special Attacks". You even get to use his 8-Hit Combo Move. In order for it to work, you must have ALL three codes on.

Did you have the Kingdom Key equipped? If you didn't that's the reason it didn't work.
