Redstone is used to make...like, well anything you can imagine, if you're good with it. Like an automatically opening wall, for instance. Making enemies spawn from a tripwire. Pulling the ground out from under you and making you fall in lava. Etc. (Or what Jiku said) Also, Tekkit/Technic makes Minecraft 20x better.

Or have a decent video card. I love it, personally. Totally worth it. And there is a demo, so try it out.
