Hara kiri was used when one had been dishonoured or more often dishonoured their feudal lord with failure. They were granted what little of their honour remained by taking their own life. To also be more specific, one of the contributing factors that increases suicide rates is lack of social cohesion. In Asian countries the suicide rates are much lower than those of North America, because more emphasis is placed on the family, the community, the society as a whole. The culture is one of collectivist roots and individual acts are often discouraged especially if they will bring dishonour to the family.
