I see your dilemma on the one hand you can meet family you have yet to know and on the other you get a sense of independence from your family. I guess what it comes down to is which can you live with having your friends mad at you for a little while or missing a chance to meet your brother for the first time when who knows when you will get the chance to again. I'd say the choice is pretty clear and I'd choose to see family. But I can not know where your heart lies so I wish you luck with your decision.
