The world of Skie is a dangerous place. It is the only planet in the universe, and it is made entirely of gas. There is no ground, only an atmosphere and clouds. Originally, there were only birds and bats in Skie, but eventually they evolved into humans and other animals. They built there homes in the clouds themselves. They adapted to be able to use the clouds as homes, having the ability to live and float inside the floating masses of condensation. The humans adapted to the use of these clouds so much that eventually they lost their ability to fly, and bared no resemblance to their ancestors.

One night, as the clouds were slowly drifting throughout the atmosphere, there was a meteor shower. Thousands of glowing pieces of rack broke through the eternal blue of the sky, and crash landed on the clouds. After the meteors had cooled, the humans used them to their advantage. They built massive ships, bikes, and homes out of the metal and natural gas found in the rocks that fell from the sky. The humans stopped depending on the clouds, and became completely dependent on the metals from the meteors. They all lived on these floating cities built from the metal, and they had all completely lost all trace of their avian ancestors.

All except one family, who chose not to live in the cities like everyone else, but to remain forever flying, only rarely stopping on a cloud or the top of one of the metal cities, now referred to as "Cazes" (pronounced CAY-ses[plural] or cayze). The flying family called themselves the Nikos, and they were revered as gods by all the people in the Cazes. Some of the Nikos were more like bats, some were more like birds.

Eventually, a form of government came to rule over all the Cazes, and the government declared the Nikos enemies of the humans. The Niko family was getting stronger and larger, and there were at least twenty Nikos in the current generation. This is their story.
