Not too surprising considered that it's the very purpose of senses. But the smell's importance has been greatly reduced to, like I mentioned, detecting gas or smoke. And since gas leaks aren't all that common (and if they do occur, chances are that there is somebody else in the building to warn you), it's a bit exaggerated to call smell the "most important sense". It is in fact the second least important, after taste. I'd ditch smell in exchange for a nullification of unpleasant odors and the reduction of taste in order to go for a healthier lifestyle. The slight probability of vented gas is a risk I'd be willing to take.
Yeah, because everyone experiences at least one lethal gas leak in his life.
