I think that on the whole classic rock was written with more thought than modern rock. Don't get me wrong, bands like Dream Theater and Muse are still writing insanely deep rock songs with a modern feel, but the mainstream of rock today is pop rock and metal, both of which are usually less musically complex. Not to say that there isn't a beauty in simplicity, but I have a bit more respect for artists that put lots of thought into their writing. That being said, modern rock has more diversity, which is natural; rock started out as one fairly well-defined genre, and over time small ideas evolved into sub-genres, and given the decades since rock's conception, there's been a good amount of time for this evolution to occur. It's really all a matter of personal preference as to which is better.

Dream Theater. Really underrated band, and they have easily some of the most talented musicians in rock music today. Their stuff is really varied too. I suggest listening to their Scenes From a Memory album first if you do look into them.
