DS... I have a feeling you didn't want premiums in this section. I'll ask you if you don't reply to it.
DS has been working on this non-stop since noon yesterday, guys... He's getting some sleep now. Let him get a chance to rest up.
I grew up in a very social status school system. Clothes was part of it. You had to wear what was "in" to fit in. And yes, the girls wearing the tight low-cut clothes attract more and give more of an air of sexiness around them. They're expected to wear clothes like that in some cases. While men, ironically enough... Are fine with a suit and tie, tux if needed. I just went to a job seminar for business my major. I saw the guys nicely dressed in suits and ties, some in shirts and ties, which they said in the e-mail was fine. Myself I was in a dress shirt, dress pants and shoes. Looking at the other girls, I was shocked to see most girls dressed in tight shirts/revealing shirts or both, some with spiked heels and pointy boots with either dress pants or even jeans. Even one of my classmates who usually does better than me in classes was wearing a business suit with a low-cut shirt and looked like she could barely fit in any of it. I asked that a few days after about how the seminar went, she said she didn't get any job offer at all. When every table I went to got at least an interest, and even an offer to go work in Boston. It's not just school and society, it's also the work world. That's even mentioned in the seminar, that clothes are basically one of the most vital parts of the work week.
I agree with you, Repliku. I was lucky, my mom married my dad at a young age, but she realized when I was little that my dad was an fundamentalist, she kept him from doing things too extreme. I was also driven away from the church by his lectures and his things about god. Anything you talk to him about brings the comparison to religion on it. I also seen the times with 60 minutes. There was a Evangelical church camp that was shut down last summer or so that the fact is they were literally brainwashing the kids, one investigator said it was the same as an Alkaida camp. If you look on the news, molestations, brainwashing, banning of books and movies, and other things that the church is hiding, or publicly stating because they think it'll make everyone to burn in hell. It makes you wonder who seriously is the one who is causing, in their pov: "the world to fall apart." Kids should be able to think and do for themselves. My mom was creeped out by the ending of the books, but she still was fine with me reading it. My dad didn't even want to me to see the movie. I learned from my mom acceptance and understanding. I learned from my dad to avoid religion and to keep an eye out for any problems with it. It could've gone the other way, but I wonder if it did... Or if my mom wasn't firmly against my dad doing anything like my dad might've planned... What would've happened. In any case, movies and books like The Golden Compass brings out the extremists. Amazingly enough, everyone else is willing to enjoy a movie, even people who are from the church, and take it as it is. Free will seems to be a forgotten thing now in some parts of the churches. It's sad when you think about it.
I'd keep a careful eye on your opinion, boy... Warnings are one of my favorite things to hand out. >> Atomic bombs weren't even created back then. The U.S. didn't start that until WWII started. And also, the U.S. never wanted to be in the war. They were neutral until Pearl Harbor happened. They wanted to keep away from the issues of the world. Kind of ironic when you think about it today. In any case, I think Hitler would've easily taken over. He was on the brink of taking over Britain when we finally joined. That's my thoughts.
I think overall... We're becoming a religious nation. Believe it or not, look at the line of presidents. All of them were Christian. (I think) There was only one who wasn't and that was JFK. The problem is that the Christian branches in some cases is that they're getting so out of control, look at the Evangelical branch... Well over 50% of the voters right now are Evangelical. My dad being one. There's rarely seperation of Church and state now. In any case, we're having people DIE over there. And no, I don't believe they're dying for "the good of the country." You have a mother, father, sister, brother, friend, anyone... Who dies over there and see how you feel. Bush is spending a fortune on this war while the economy is falling apart, the dollar is going to be removed by the international market if it keeps on going. Economist: "Fall of the Dollar" for more info. And the banks are even giving up on the dollar. And Bush just keeps on spending, and spending and spending... And also, the Bush's, (I live in Maine) they just installed a windmill for their house. After Bush denied oil price cuts for the poor people when oil is over 90 dollars a gallon. There's something seriously wrong there.
I heard something about the bible that was interesting a few days ago. It was written 200 years after Jesus's death. Not by god, not by Jesus, but by a bunch of (most likely) Guys who were rich and educated. Whether or not that's fake is up to you, but that's something to consider, because a lot of people or at least my dad believes that Jesus wrote the bible. That means in some cases the bible isn't written from if you will "God's" work, it was written from the POV and opinion from the men who lived during that time. And if you ever considered what it was like 2000 years ago. You can pretty much imagine why it was written in some cases like it was.
About that if you think about it, kids in a recent reality show where they had to live like frontiersman. Part of that, of course... Was killing chickens. And note: Some of these kids were like eight or nine years old. They were freaked and grossed out of course, but they still ate the food when it was placed in front of them. I think some don't care, some are vegans for the rest of their lives, it's up to them. But the thing is, if you ask the local butchers, they will tell you where you got it from. Not places like Wal-Mart, hell no... But a local supermarket locally owned, or honest butchers. I have a ton around this area, you ask them questions and they will tell you straight out where the food comes from.
Dark... One more sentence like that from you and you'll get a warning. Seriously, post some depth for a change. And maybe it is or isn't. Evil has a very broad definition that can be brought up in another conversation where it's not spam. I'm just saying that their POV about the movie and books is considered evil because they are trying to impose their own thoughts and beliefs to others. The same way in some cases they did in the book.
To add to that, Repliku, some of the Christian and catholic churches enjoyed the movie. The quotes I stated are from a christian website. Not all catholics are going to hate this movie. Out of four reviews, I only read one that was actually saying: "Well, I'm strongly against it because it's a lead-in for killing God." Even he said at the end the kids can see it, but be talked about it afterwards. Not all of the people from those churches are evil, just the extremists are the ones who blow this out of proportion.
I think they knew what to do during fights. But a lot got hurt when Sherman abandoned them. They tried to cross the river in sheer desperation to get free, some of them drowned, some actually made it, some just watched. And who knows what happened them if they were caught.
Agreed with Xendran. God doesn't just sit there and say: "You don't believe me, burn in hell." The Christianity I think puts it in the extremes sometimes. But basically, at the end, and this is what I got from my mom, if you honestly ask god for forgiveness he will grant it. Whether or not you end up in heaven, who knows... But if you ask, he will give it to you. And many people don't believe in God, does it make them wrong? No... Does it make them satanic? No... If you actually read the bible, and think about it, beyond what they give you... You should be able to realize what God truly says in it. I never read it myself, but my mom who has read it taught me a lot from it.
I'm saying they FOLLOWED... They didn't fight. They followed the soldiers. Kindly stop twisting my words around to find an argument about it. The families followed the soldiers at the end of the line. Sherman tried to discourage them, but they wouldn't listen.
It wasn't african men... Sherman liked African men to help the war. It was African FAMILIES that were following him. He would've let the men march to hell and back with him, not the families. In any case... He did what he thought would work. It's war, things will happen that are going to be ugly.
Sherman was actually against 99.9% of the attrocities that happened during that march. Yes, he wanted to burn down the crops and steal a bunch of things, but he did it to hurt the South. The soldiers mob mentality unfortunately got in the way of it working. Sherman was disappointed with the soldiers work because they actually in a lot of cases did a lot more harm than good. The soldiers did most of the damage done to the South. Also, what happened is that the south was winning the war. The only part that I am against was the way they treated the blacks. Who basically thought Sherman was their god descending and rescuing them. They followed a long time and was a burden to the soldiers because they needed supplies and slowed down the march. He basically cut off access at a river so they couldn't get across after his men went across. That's basically the only part I consider wrong if you will.
That is from an extremist's POV, in some if not most cases. I'm not saying it happens, it does. But there's a reason why I blatantly refuse to buy anything from places other than Hannaford and places like a store nearby called the meat house. They TELL you exactly where they got the meat. They aren't looking for a quick buck, but they raise an honesty policy that keeps their store going. I always look from the ones that they say is free range, and the ones that they say are the ones who are treated humanely and die humanly. The turkey's I eat for thanksgiving and Christmas are free range from Vermont. The people actually kill them from behind to reduce the stress for them. They're actually ten times better than the ones that are from the Purina and other farms. I also buy chicken from the hannaford where you can ask them and they tell you free range. Same for beef. I still refuse to go anywhere else for meat I want. You just have to ask around. There's places that still follow the hundreds of years tradition of cruelty free areas. You can ask your friendly butcher nearby. I don't suggest the places like wal-mart and other places like it, though.
Easy, Darkwatch, she's allowed to state her opinion as are you. I suggest you also keep those posts longer before you get a warning. Same for you, MicketyMike. Write about your own thoughts and POV instead of just others. Just a heads-up. In any case, I posted my opinion. I wanted to get that across to Darkwatch and Micketymike. >>
That's kinda been hammered down, micketymike. Several times until it's been beaten to death. And the question is: "So what...?" What if he wants to teach people to be god haters, so what if he wants to make everyone hate god and kill him. He can't make them think it. He can only impose his thoughts and beliefs. My dad is going to spend two friggin hours driving me home lecturing me about the movie and the bible and how everyone's going to burn to hell and Satan is going to rise from the depths of it to consume us all... He's Evangelical, extremist, if you will. But that won't change my own POV, my own belief about what I got from the movie, or the books, or whatever the hell else I do in my life. Does that make me bad...? No. Does it make my dad bad...? No, it doesn't. Some people might see it and take it as something where they hate god. Will that really kill this planet and make god drop dead? Most likely not. Even in the books, Pullman makes it hard to kill God. It's not like all of them say: "We hate you, die." And he keels over. It's also a parrallel universe. And the god from their universe compared to ours is completely different. Kids have, as much as adults... To follow their OWN POV, their OWN belief. Parents and churches and everyone else who impose on that makes it no better than the books where Pullman puts the church as the villains. That goes for anyone, scientists, philosophers, anyone... Pullman wants these kids to think, so what if he wants them to wonder about church and god and if they're evil. If I listened to my dad about 99.9% of the time I would be against this movie also. But I have been allowed to think and question and wonder about it from my mom's side. And it has allowed me to decide and reason for my own on my own POV. And yes, I'm agnostic, but I am a strong believer in God, I just hate the church for the imposing beliefs, their own POV, including the bible. Which was written 200 years after Jesus's death, fyi... About what they try to impose. I believe in what I believe in myself. And I'm damned proud of it.
Actually... I have actually READ some of these Christian reviews. Not from Yahoo where all the bible thumpers *no offense to anyone* are typing that it's the devil and satan will rise and cause a burning inferno... But actual reviewers from the christian websites. They actually enjoyed the movie, and believe it or not... I'm not lying here... Are PULLING beliefs from the movie and comparing it to god. Another part I found interesting in my own POV is that they have read all the books. And they actually do say what happens and encourage kids to read it, just for them to think and learn. They point out several facts from the book that at the end don't make it sound as "athiest" if you will as what the others are saying. And Pullman isn't an athiest. If he was, he wouldn't believe in God. He might want to be, but he's not, I say he's an extreme agnostic. A questioner in the faith and against god and his beliefs. In any case, it still hasn't changed my mind about the parents and bible thumpers who want to basically ban the movie because of their beliefs and try to impose their beliefs about not seeing the movie... But it also makes it interesting in my POV that a lot of the critics, CHRISTIAN and Catholic critics are taking this a lot better and even saying: "Hey, bring the kids and let them figure it out themselves." It's something in my own POV that should be considered. After all, God did give you the chance to think. If he didn't, we wouldn't have a chance to think at all, period. It's called free will to decide what to do with it. And like it has been said... If you seriously think that you aren't going to make it through one movie without holding your beliefs. You have to wonder if you even had the right beliefs in the first place. And that's what I think the church is afraid of. And yes, at the end of the last book, they do "kill God." Believe me or not. But even the critics said themselves that they had a reason and a right to. Not the same as what people believe. Take my opinion, or leave it.
I'm taking Geology right now for a class, and basically it is known. Not predicted, but known, that another mass extinction like the one that wiped out the dinosaurs will happen in the next thousand years. Whether or not we'll die, who knows. It's not anything against us, it's just the cycle of earth's species. That's the scientist's POV.
