    I tried painting something today.
It started out as an abstract... then turned into a field... then turned into an ocean... :|

I used to be a topaz whore... now I find myself using it and going "GAH THAT'S POOP" and baleeting the layer. =p

Really topaz is good for a quick fix but my best stuff was made without it. At least in my opinion.

Your colours are sex Chev, as usual. It looks like over saturation is causing some wonky pixels out of place on her arm. Other than that... I wish my colours turned out half as decent as yours do. D:

I didn't even notice you had a second focal there. D:

Anyway, the white one looks really badly rendered, and above that his face is just so small to begin with. Sizing it down in any program any more than it already is will just cause problems from the start.

Tip: Don't be afraid to show a bigger focal. Just because your canvas is small, doesn't mean your focal has to be. For example:
    A:
    compared to
    B:

In B You can see more of the focal's face, and it also helps because you better see where the lighting and direction is coming from, which makes placement of effects so much easier as it is.
When we size her down like in A she becomes more static looking. Does that make sense?

P.S: I don't mean to preach, I make these mistakes ALL the time myself. D:

    Don't downgrade yourself! D:

GIMP is a bit more powerful that PS Elements. To me it looks like you re-sized the image more than once. Once you re-size an image without turning it into a smart object, the object then becomes sized at 100%. In other words once you size down, and try to size it back up you'll get some quality and pixelation issues. If THAT'S not what you did then can I see the original stock image you used?

I was listening to a song by Jamie Cullum the whole time on repetition, I dunno if this affected anything but it was a damn good song. "Not While I'm around"

    Basically covered everything here.

Rather than giving you further CnC I'll give you this single most important advise that applies to everyone. Solid basics, make the best gfx. I've said this before but graphic design is art in its own right because it follows the same basics of aesthetics. The best thing you can do is to look at professional artwork (not saying you need to be professional, but these products are the best teachers when you examine them) examine all the little things that make it what it is. Lighting, depth, placement, these are just a few things that you can start looking for. :)

    LATE RESPONSE!!

Sorry I forgot I made this topic. xD

Yeah those last three were just random stuff I took and put on here so I didn't just have three pictures. XD

The only adjustments I made to my photos were gmaps and photo filters. :)
I heard that gmaps and combining photo filters are the best way to get colours just right. Example this graphic only used gmaps:

I really think [IMG] that version would look gorgeous without text. Sad to say, the text is a bright colour, the background is white... I really don't think there's a way you can make glowy text work in this situation...

Other than that I really love the colours here and the negative space works well. The light source is a little bit overpowering, but overall it has some nice stuff going on. Good job. :D

It's really hard to give examples since Graphic Art expands to so many forms of digital imaging.

The most common examples from professionals I've found is vector art.
    Example: http://browse.deviantart.com/?qh=&section=&global=1&q=Vector#/dt5qsf

A lot of Graphic Artists that work professionally do a lot of vector work. It looks really commercial and vector tools are so versatile. Nike is an example of a simple vector design.

    http://danpankraz.files.wordpress.com/2009/08/nike_swoosh.jpg

Other graphic artists work with models and basically manipulate different photos that may or may not be their own resources to basically assemble something totally new. Sigs, photo manipulations, and design interfaces are example of this type of graphic art.
    Here's an example http://browse.deviantart.com/designs/?qh=&section=&q=manip#/d2h6dwj

A common misconception is that graphic designers copy and paste genitalia onto random stock models. This can not be farther from the truth. That is not graphic design... that's... well... Copying and pasting genitalia onto different stock models. XD

We're not 12 year olds with thousand dollar programs at our disposal. I like grouping graphic design with digital art much like I do with digital painting, or digital photography. To me, graphic design is art. I do this in my mind because they follow the same basic principles as any other form of traditional art. Lighting, depth, flow, rule of thirds, anything you can think of that you can critique on traditional art, you can also give critique to digital art, as well as graphic design. Graphic designers are artists in their own right.

Another misconception is that most graphic designers only use Photoshop. More often than not, a serious or professional graphic artist will use more than one program, or have more than one niche. Using myself as an example, I use Photoshop along with Apophysis and just recently I've picked up Photography to make my own resources for designing. There are SO many other programs that a graphic artist can use. Blender, c4d, Illustrator, Paint Tool SAI, Corel Painter, LiveBrush, Apophysis. On top of that there are so many designing tools that many designers use. Tablets, SLRs, Scanners, some designers even use a pen and paper for textures, and use other means to turn it into an applicable digital image.

Uhm... There's a lot more I can tell you but I'm drawing blanks. Someone else take over. XD
