You don't have to be a character if you don't want to. As for the way duels work, well, you basically get to choose what cards from your deck are in your hand, and you don't have to decide what your facedowns are gonna be immediately. Yes, Field Spells go into the Main Deck. When they are played, they go into the Field Spell Zone.
