....I got my first two ever phising e-mails today :D. Automated Security warnings from NatWest telling me I have had several unsuccessful login attempts and to click a link. Funny thing is I don't have an account with NatWest :)

    Anyone else have them?

.......... and no-one is there to hear it, does it make a sound?

Technically it does, because as it falls it displaces air creating waves of sound through the air. But as this is a philosophical question lets forget the technicalities :3

If no-one is there then how do we know the tree has fallen? How do we know that that particular tree made a sound as it feel if there was no witness? This could be said for many things, you wouldn't know someone existed until you actually met them or in some way encountered them? Up until that point, from your perspective, they didn't exist.

    Please discuss x]

After watching all of these religion related threads pop up I've been wondering, do we even deserve to have a concept such as religion? We took something good and pure with a set of morals to help guide society and keep us essentially good. But no, that couldn't last, could it? Bickering, not being able to decide on one true interpretation, greed and a hunger for power blinding religious leaders who have control over millions of followers relying on them for guidence.

All of this leading to wars, death, suffering and hate. Only the corruption of human beings could have done this to such a benign and wonderful concept.

The same thing happened with communism, a perfect government system on paper ruined when humans were introduced.

I think that until we resolve our differences of opinion God (if he /she exists in any form) should ignore us and leave us to our own fate for our own stupidity.

Who here has read all five books in the amazing Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy trilogy? IMO they are among some of the funniest books in existence. Written by the great Douglas Adams who must have had a mind of a complete genius (or raving mad loony), they take random to a whole new level. So, anyone?

    Intelligence

Is it a blessing or a curse? I mean, I like knowing things and being able to answer questions. It's comforting when you are familiar with what is being dicussed.

But sometimes I wish I could just wipe my mind and forget everything I know. Knowledge takes the 'magic' out of everything. When I go to see films I sit and look for things that are wrong rather than enjoying the film and I can't stop ><. My mind never stops, I can't turn it off, so I can't enjoy the simple things in life.

Intelligence also means I'm able to over complicate and over think everything. Sometimes I just wish I was dumb. Lol, it's funny because I want to lose my intelligence and others in my year want it. I suppose people just are never happy with what they have and want to live the opposite because it looks better than what they have. Wow, I rambled a bit there.

Anyway, I think it is a double-edged sword. What do you think?

    Humans

i have a question, first off i am agnostic and not really religious, but i cant understand how humans ended up so different to every other animal on the planet? im all for evolution but i cant understand how such a huge gap occured.

was it evolution got a really good idea for an organism and ran with it for millions of years? or is it just a fluke? or does it leave room for a higher being in the theory of evolution?

    Smoking Age

this has sorta split from the other two threads....

how come the age for smoking is 16 but the age for alcohol is 18? surely smoking is considerably more dangerous than drinking alcohol? i think it should at least be raised to the same level as alcohol if not higher. its weird to think i could go out and buy a pack of cigarettes right now and it being legal......

    Allergy Test

ermm, im getting my hair dyed black, but semi-permanent (in case i dont like it) and i was wondering, the one my mum got doesnt say to do an allergy test (ie put on inside of elbow and wait 48 hours) but it says it may cause allergies.

ive never been allergic to anything and im going to a party tonight and wanted to get my hair done for it. my mum put it on my elbow, do you think it would be ok to leave it for a couple of hours to see what happens or just wait 48 hours to be on the safe side?

with all of our modern conveniences and such we have a lot more free/leisure time in our modern society, which should mean that people should be happier. then how come the most treated 'illness' in the UK is depression? do people have too high expectations of life which are falling short of reality, is it something that has developed over time (plz no references to evolution, dont want any flaming) or is it something else entirely?
