Oh, man. This is disgusting. I'm hoping that teacher was fired immediately. Was she sent to prison?
I saw somewhere that Obama himself believes he doesn't deserve the award. I personally think it hasn't been long enough. We need to wait and see if he will live up to his promises, and I believe he will. I've got faith in him.
Okay, thanks! Glad that confusion was cleared up.
That's quite the accusation. Bush led our nation into war and, at the end of his administration, left our economy in ruin. Obama has to pick up the pieces. He's been working on health care and meeting with leaders of other nations purely for peace meetings, and he's trying to get our troops out of Iraq (which takes time and can't be done all at once). He's also encouraged people to return to their college educations if they never finished them and is providing financial aid in the area. You guys, he's been in office for nine months. Cleaning the mess takes time.
Whatever you do, don't try to fight him. Tell an authority figure before he gets the opportunity to do said ass kicking.
What do you think is sick about it? How is it unreasonable?
Ahh, I see what you're saying. You're right, if King had expanded further, I'm sure he could've given her some valuable criticism, but yes, that is all he said. I have nothing against him for saying that--it's his opinion, after all--but you're right in that that particular criticism did not offer any help by specifying certain problems with her writing, etc. Of course, if you read King's book on writing (which is literally called On Writing, and I suggest you check it out, it's very good), he states his own opinion on the talent of writers. He thinks there are bad writers, decent writers, good writers, and great writers. It is his belief that you can make decent writers into good ones (he thinks himself to be a good one) but you cannot make good ones into great ones, nor can you make bad ones into good ones. Not saying I completely agree, but that's his philosophy. When I say I'm a writer, I don't mean a published one (yet)...but I've spent enough time writing (and studying writing) to feel I can call myself a writer. Let's see...I found out I had a talent for it when I was in fourth grade and started working on the craft when I was ten. I've been improving ever since (I'm sixteen now) and have written a novel that I'm trying to get published. If you want to improve your skill, I suggest reading King's book as well as Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott. Read as many articles about writing that you can get your hands on, especially if they include learning the basics such as show and don't tell, use your adverbs sparingly (irony intended there), and, in the words of Mark Twain, "employ a simple writing style". Also, the best ways to improve: read a lot (quality books, not crap like Harlequin romance novels or something) and write a lot. Write, and then don't be afraid to pick out the mistakes and fix them.
Ok, but then if I want to discuss that particular topic, do I start a new topic...? Snake Eyes posted in a thread I apparently revived saying it...
It would be great if they had a new song, but I doubt it. I think what they'll do is use the song from the most recent "main" Kingdom Hearts game whenever they have these in-between games for the smaller consoles. I'm pretty sure the new songs will always be reserved for the "Kingdom Hearts ___" games.
Hm? I'm pretty sure this one was bolded when I clicked on it...and the last post wasn't even a month ago. What counts as being too late to reply to a topic?
As a writer myself, yes, I can say that her writing really is that bad. She said herself it was the first thing she ever wrote, and honestly, the first thing a person ever writes should most certainly not be something they try to publish. Saying she can't write is criticizing her writing, and he could have said much worse. Of course great writers have the right to critique another person's writing. It's their area of expertise. If you're, say, an amazing cook, and you taste something someone else made and notice that two flavors don't complement one another or something, you're going to criticize it. If you're an artist and you observe a flaw in another's work (such as proportions or something), you will say something. She did not put much effort into writing her "novel". She did not study the craft of writing, she just winged it and ended up crashing and burning in the quality department. As for "some smart-ass telling you your time was a waste", when you put your work out to the public in a professional manner (i.e. publishing your book and putting it in stores), you are risking criticism. That's what professional writers are supposed to do: take criticism and let it help them improve as writers. If Meyer wanted to, she could examine the criticism handed to her and use it to make her writing flourish. That would be wonderful. Criticism is not meant to insult (usually) but to assist the writer.
Thanks guys! And whoops, sorry about bumping the threads. I'll watch out for that.
I don't think his judgment was off. All he said was "Stephenie Meyer can't write worth a darn." That's not bad at all. He was only speaking the truth. It's not like he called her a whore or said he wished she would die. He merely criticized her writing using seven simple words.
There's no doubt that Lemony Snicket's humor is fantastic and funny. I also loved how he would use devices in his writing that pertained to what was happening in the story. I remember in the ninth one, he was talking about deja vu, and then the next page was the exact same as the one before it. And in the twelfth, the characters were staring at their reflections in a pond, so he made the text backwards. I had to read it with a mirror, but it was such a great idea.
What's up?
He Lives In You from the Lion King sequel is so pretty. It's actually from the musical, and I love that they put it in Simba's Pride. I'm sure there are more, but they're slipping my mind at the moment.
Pretty much anyone on Disney Channel, but if we're talking about classic Disney, I'd say Snow White. Man, I can't stand her. Her voice is annoying, she acts irritating, and she seems to think that sitting on your ass all day will bring you the perfect man. Oh wait...for her, it does. Which just makes it worse. You mean Clayton?
This looks like it'll be amazing! Although I hope they found a good way to fill ninety minutes (or two hours or whatever it is). The book was pretty short, so hopefully they won't screw it up.
Obama's amazing. I love what he's done so far, and I hardly ever see my mom reverent of anyone, but she's just in awe over him. I watched him on David Letterman and he just seems so genuine. It's really wonderful to see a real person representing our country, not some typical politician who's only looking out for number one. He's funny, too.
Whoever said "it happened a long time ago so it doesn't matter", that's ridiculous. First of all, it most certainly did not happen very long ago. Eight years is such a miniscule amount of time, even if it doesn't feel that way to us. Should we stop caring about those who died in Vietnam because it was a long time ago? What about Hiroshima? The Holocaust? The Civil War? Also, people are still affected by 9/11 to this day. First of all, there's the obvious one: the war. Then there are the people who died in the World Trade Center or because of it, people that are still missed by family members and loved ones. That was really insensitive of the people at your school. I wonder how they would feel about it if their parent or sibling or something died due to the events of 9/11.
