Why turn the Like system into a rep system when we can just get a rep system? Also posts are already unlikable.
Even if you could limit likes the way rep was limited, if rep CAN be implemented why not? It would be like the likes, but with a negative rep feature as well as positive and comments can be added easily. The like system and rep system are both essentially used by member as popularity tools of sorts. Like "LOOK AT ME I HAVE X AMOUNT OF LIKES OR X AMOUNT OF REP GEMS" except with rep it's a BETTER representation because not only does it allow for positive but also negative. The like system is like saying "IF YOU DON'T HAVE ANYTHING NICE TO SAY DON'T SAY ANYTHING AT ALL", but negative feedback and criticism are just as important as the positive side of things.
I have never received any feeling of accomplishment from amassing large amounts of material points I cannot spend, similar to how a predetermined user title written years ago by some user for a contest with little to no originality also gave me no sense of accomplishment. Those who implemented these things are trying, but they're efforts go unnoticed in those particular areas. Give the people what they want, I say.
This is definitely a monarchy. Everything happens based on Misty saying yes or no to our anguished cries for various changes.
Seriously though, what does this even do for me?
It's like I said to Libre earlier, people either want it or don't care either way. So why not bring it back?[DOUBLEPOST=1375137793][/DOUBLEPOST] Quoting to restate everything in this post because I agree with it and it's worth much more than a stupid like.
I wouldn't say we have enough, but you and James have both made a valid point in the fact that ACTUAL DAILY TRAFFIC is a lot less than the total number of registered users. We get a much smaller number than 54,000 different members logging and actually contributing on a regular basis.
All those people that frequent other sections have just as much right and opportunity to come in here and speak up as we do. And as for returning and future members, returning members will most definitely be more affected by keeping a like system since we had a rep system for so long and everyone liked it. Future members probably won't care if they never knew we had a like system in the first place.
Your own personal beliefs, yes, but most of you are indifferent about it from what I've seen. Your beliefs are shared, just look at Mish's post. And as for feedback, why should feedback based on YOUR opinion about Member X's post be a GROUP discussion? If I feel a certain way about your post that's more between you and I than between the entire forum and whoever wants to chime in. In response to you and Mish basically calling us a vocal minority, I'd like to point out that we're the only one's showing that we care. The majority isn't being vocal right now and they were't vocal against rep when we had it. Let them come in and speak if they don't like our suggestion, it's all over the "What's New" page. And adding rep wouldn't affect 54,000 members. I know most of them don't log in everyday, or even every year.
Rep is something that people look at and compare between each other, people looked at the member list and sorted it based on rep to see who had the most and where they stood, rep can give you ACTUAL feedback be it positive or negative with the comments whereas Likes are just "So and so likes this". They're both essentially number systems, but this one is more detailed and we had it before and people liked it, so why not bring it back because clearly most people don't care for our current one all that much. And If they really hold "no significant meaning what so ever" then you guys should just implement rep back into the system because this thread has been in this section for less than two hours and already has more posts than one thread would get in weeks as well as more posts than 8 threads put together. Clearly people want this.[DOUBLEPOST=1375134730][/DOUBLEPOST] This. Especially that middle sentence. Dear god so many wasted notifications because of stupid likes. Do I care? NO.
It COULD mean that but there is no way of knowing, and like we pointed out the value of a like is almost nothing considering A. they are limitless and B. the materials they eventually yield are essentially useless right now. With Rep you can let someone know exactly how you feel about their post be it negative or positive, instead of either positive or indifference/ignorance.[DOUBLEPOST=1375134056][/DOUBLEPOST] Yes but people clearly cared more about rep and tried to get their rep up by posting, people essentially had friendly competition with rep, people were ambitious with rep. Now when to comes to Likes everyone is more or less like you are about both. They don't care at all. Also, the fact that rep had more of an in-depth system with limits and scaling based on different factors and couldn't be handed out infinitely every day made it more valuable. I've got literally like 10 likes from this thread and what are they doing for me?
Also one thing I liked about rep is it at least allows one to give and receive negative feedback, which is an integral part of a community setting. Whereas with Likes it's either positive or nothing, which is completely unrealistic.
One thing I'd like to point out about how I've always felt about likes is it encourages laziness. See a post you like? LIKE IT AND MOVE ON! I've seen threads where it's the OP and then that post has like 5 likes and no replies. The like system is just so simple, you click a button and move on. It encourages nothing out of us.
Honestly I don't remember anyone taking things THAT seriously for a long time. We rarely had any call out threads or arguments based on rep in the past few years as far as I can recall.
In the picture showing the mechanics of how it's set up there is a daily limit, so yes it has a flood buffer. No just repping every single post everyday.
Well Vivica I'm sure there's probably a way of being able to make it so we can't decide how much we give, which honestly wouldn't bother me. I just like the idea of a rep system as whole better than Likes.
You're becoming more and more like ReverofEnola every day.
This. All of this.
I'm just not cut out to be one of you guys, sorry Cat
What most of you guys are missing is it's all still determined by status. Post count, time being a member, "trophies" which I'm thinking my be the equivalent of pins, and however much rep you already have. You just might also be able to choose to give less rep for something that may not deserve as much rep in your eyes, but someone like you would still give more than Nova who's current account is pretty new.
