He's pretty much the most prominent RPG composer you've never heard of. Or maybe you have! His name could be right up there with Uematsu, and in fact they used to work together at Square. Sakimoto broke off in 2002 to form Basiscape, which has since become synonymous with the Vanillaware brand (Odin Sphere, GrimGrimoire, Dragon's Crown), but he continues to spread his orchestral brilliance to any game that calls for it—including later Square Enix projects. So whadya think? Any fans in the house? Anyone become a fan recently, or saw this thread and started looking up his work? Was he your favorite composer all this time and you never knew it?

I've started thinking about this since reading Ashwin's story, Mandelbrot's Limit. I really liked it and thought it was better than either of the two stories I'd written at that time, but Ash thinks they're about even. I had first begun cutting down the length of my work after reading a friend's flash fiction and taking a short story class, but now I'm starting to edge back the other way. All things being equal—Your story is solid either way, it's descriptive, the imagery is vivid, et cetera—if you have the choice of including every detail that occurs to you or paring it down to just the necessities, which would you choose? If you go back and forth, which is your preferred mode? Do you find one easier than the other, or value one aesthetically above the other?
Similar in premise to another pending suggestion of mine. This would be handy for keeping up-to-date on projects, games, rules & guidelines, RPs, and lots of other stuff without the need for posters to bump threads or send out mass PMs.

I thought this would be an interesting way to kick off discussion here. Basically what we're doing here is taking Kingdom Hearts, either the series in general or a specific game, cracking it open and seeing what makes it tick. Any topic is fair game, from characters to settings to plot twists. Open discourse and debate are encouraged, just be sure to keep it civil and respect differences of perspective. I will periodically offer subjects for discussion, but feel free to go off on your own tangents as well. To start, let's talk about... The plucky hero. What makes him the hero of this particular tale? Does he make a good focal point character? What do you learn from him as the story progresses? What does he learn? I find it interesting that the original Kingdom Hearts ends with Sora returning "home," in a sense, only to find it warped and twisted by Ansem's influence. The rest of the game follows the classic hero's journey outline to a T, but then not only is the homecoming aspect a negative experience rather than positive, it isn't even the moment of closure; in the end, Sora doesn't return home, and decides to continue his journey. Intriguing subversion, or obvious sequel hook? I'd like to hear everyone else's thoughts on this and anything else the character brings to mind.

As a writer I personally find a lot of art references helpful as well, because they often give names to shapes, objects, etc. and help me visualize better. Would anyone else find it helpful to have some art references added to the list? If so I have a wealth of such to draw upon, but I wanted to make it a group decision. I could also add not just art references but artworks in general, for inspiration.
Writing is such a curious and whimsical thing. Many forms of art are more rigorous or demanding, but all it really takes to write is an idea and a place to jot it down. So where do your ideas come from? What do you draw upon for inspiration? And when you actually begin writing, what do you start with? An outline? Plot details? A description of the setting or characters? Or do you just start putting sentences on the page and see where it takes you? A lot of my ideas start with one particularly vivid character, usually inspired by an existing one (or several), and from there I extrapolate details of the plot and the world as I fill in their backstory, biography, and so on. They mold the world around them with their own hands, in a sense. I'm also prone to listening to a song or seeing a particularly gorgeous illustration, forming a scene around it in my head, then forming a narrative around that scene.
OR IS IT? ok, DISCLAIMER BEFORE ANYONE BITES MY HEAD OFF: First off, tw rape culture talk for that link. Second, THAT IS NOT NECESSARILY WHAT I WANT TO TALK ABOUT HERE. Let me zoom in on the part I DO want to talk about: And there are references and ext. links all throughout that article, if anyone's interested in fact-checking for themselves of learning more. tl;dr comedy can pretty much brainwash you under the right circumstances. So maybe we should be more careful with it? What do y'all think? My first argument against this mentality is, similarly to the article, if someone takes issue with your joke then that's one less person who laughed at it; so it's not only a joke, it's an inferior one. You could do better. And the second is, well, we can't say these things cause negativity but if we're to follow this train of thought then it's absolutely a contributing factor. And I think anyone feeling reasonable will admit that. It's not the cause, but it does compound the problem. The issue is that conceding either one of those points—that it's not the cause for one side or that it contributes for the other—usually gets you yelled at, threatened, and called dirty names. You kinda get forced to pick a side, when neither side benefits from turning it into a war. So where do you stand? Are you firmly on a side, or do you see points from each camp? Or do you think they're all blathering idiots?
I'm sure there are plenty of threads about Xion by now, but this one has a specific purpose: When Days came out, BbS and 3D didn't exist. And as we know, those games added a lot of people who were look-alikes of or otherwise linked to other characters, something Xion caught a lot of flak for originally. So here's my question: Has your opinion of Xion changed since then? Do you regard her more fondly, or do you dislike her even more now? Did you care that she was a copy before or was it her personality that turned you off to her?
So a while ago I spied this thread. Which seems to suggest something I did not know before: People seem to prefer Ventus to Roxas? I wonder if that still holds true or if adding more votes to the pool will make a difference. So who's your favorite?

So usually when I submit one of these things I have a rough idea of whether it's actually possible, but here my coding ignorance is on full display. If I had to guess how it would work, maybe it'd be something like [userid]61191[/userid]? The idea is to always display the user's current name and make it responsive to name changes, another tool that would help game organizers and also staff I think, since they refer to users the most in site updates, hiring processes, labor credit etc. I'm gomen for flooding the section I just keep gETTING ALL THESE IDEAS...
Thought this would be nice for people to have for both casual and formal purposes, e.g. if someone takes a long break from the site and isn't sure who's who when they get back, or if (as is the case with my Mafia game) you need to keep track of name changes for a player list.
When we converse on the net, our recipients lose a lot of context: They can't hear one's tone of voice or inflection, they can't see one's facial expressions or body language... So one way or another we have to make up for this, be it with shortcuts like imho or rofl, or with emotes :Y :J :P. Now that I'm done stating the obvious... I've noticed that even the basic stuff, like :D and :P, mean something different to each person. Which makes me wonder: Which emotes, shortcuts, and other little textspeak are you most fond of, and what do they convey for you? What do you mean when you say 'lol' or 'o_o'? Few samples in the spoiler. Spoiler: Nova's Internet Language :L Decided to start with the one most people ask me about. Yes, the great mystery... First off, the 'L' is the corner of an absurdly-stretched, smiling mouth, if anyone was confused at that point. This is used in a generalized light-hearted context, such as when joking or when mildly amused by someone. It may also be used as a way to embrace my own dorkiness, e.g. when I follow a terrible, terrible pun with :L That's what it's supposed to mean, but I also tend to use it as filler when I'm not sure what to say or in a sort of "Aha I see" way when someone tells me something. :E Think of a dog baring its fangs. This can be used in silly contexts as well as serious, but usually it means I'm edging from one side to the other. So if it was a joke before, something might've set me off; whereas if it comes off the end of an argument, it might be a sign of me calming down. Usually I'll say something innocuous like "Yeah yeah watch it :E" if it's in good fun. rofl/pff 'Pff' being onomatopoeia rather than an abbreviation. I have an oddly specific use for these two. Usually they happen when I didn't laugh aloud but I thought to myself "That's good. That's REALLY good," or a joke caught me off-guard with how funny it was. It's a laugh of surprise, in other words. 'Pff' is also used more generally as my form of 'lol' since it seems more organic to me.
I'm using classics in the broadest sense possible here—With all the music in the world there's no way everybody's heard every track, so any song you've heard all over the place, anything that's been on a top 100 of all time... Any type, any genre, any instruments... It's all fair game. As usual with my threads, it's appreciated if your youtube embeds are in spoilers for the sake of people's load times. I started with a couple rock/metal tracks because they're what inspired the idea, but I'll probably add other genres at some point. Spoiler: My Faves It's weird to think this isn't the original version of this song. Whenever I so much as hear the word "watchtower," I think of Hendrix. That melody is one-of-a-kind and absolutely infectious, and the lyrics are a little adventure of their own. Dylan really wrapped that mystery up tight, credit where credit is due; but in the end it's Hendrix who made me want to unwrap it, so his cover ends up being my favorite. I always loved this song, but then I found out the history behind it, which you can read about here; that the Alice in Chains guitarist, Jerry Cantrell, wrote it for his father who'd served in the Vietnam war, attempting to describe his experiences. About the song he says "It was the start of the healing process between my Dad and I from all that damage that Vietnam caused;" and that when his father came to see him play and heard the song, "at the end, he took his hat off and just held it in the air. And he was crying the whole time." Details like that are what push good into great and great into amazing. I'm sorry, I can't help it. I love Queens and I'll never ever stop loving them. Those riffs. My god, those riffs. The singing is unlike anything else I can imagine. The breakdown about three minutes in hits you like a hurricane. And just look at Grohl hammerin' away on the drums back there! He always looks so giddy and hyped-up at a drumset... The lyrics aren't trying to be complicated, they flow well and there is a bit of a persistent message throughout. Now, when you add the video... well, it gets confusing. What the f██k is going on there? I dunno, but it makes me laugh, and it tells me they never took themselves too seriously. They're just here to rock. And rock they do. Rock they do indeed.
I know this is gonna sound weird and gross to a lot of people, but I have a bit of a biting/chewing habit. This ranges from gum to pens to any DS stylus available, to my own nails and dead bits of skin <- (That one's REALLY gross so don't hover unless you're brave). And when I have nothing, I tend to just grind my teeth. Obviously none of this is terribly healthy, but I don't really wanna chew gum everyday either seein' as that will quickly wear out my tooth enamel. Soooo does anyone know a chewable something that's mostly innocuous? The more durable the better 'cause I'll bite the f██k out of it.
