Can take a few moments to appreciate traffic cones? They are truly the most perfect thing humanity has ever invented. Look at them. They do exactly what they're made to do (alert incoming drivers of a temporarily off-limits part of the road) as effectively as anything can. They're portable. They stack on top of each other so you don't have to move them one at a time. They squish down when pressure is applied so that if a car runs over one, the impact will damage neither the car now the cone. On top of all that, they don't need anything to power them. I liked the first game's story for its counter-religious themes. The scene where Hope and Lightning start to realize that humans in Cocoon are basically just pets for the Fal Cie is where I really got into it. The characters were decent and I felt a real connection to Hope until he started to latch on to Lightning and made her take on that mother-figure role, but that's only because it's such as overdone stereotype for orphan boys. The setting was okay and I felt like there could have been a lot of room for an Elder Scrolls level amount of lore and backstory, but this is Final Fantasy so that potential was bound to be wasted from the get-go.

Last Christmas, I watched my kind of smarter than average nephew play chess with the genius son of my cousin. My nephew did horribly and then had to leave midgame*, so I took over and pretty much fixed every single mistake that he made. I couldn't totally save the game, but I did turn it around so I wasn't at a total disadvantage. *For reference, he had his king on the opposite half of the board. I only managed to fix this by getting the other guy's king into check in such a combination of ways that the entire board got switched around. From the position I was in, this was easy.
