That' s exactly what happened to me at my final oral exam. I was hoping the examiner would pick anything 18th century, Voltaire, Rousseau, a philosopher goddam it ! But noooo, it had to be Madame Bovary and her ****ing feelings.

It quickly became obvious to the examiner I had only read the tiny part she was questioning me about. She asked, I confirmed and explained why. I managed to get a 09/20, not bad considering the circumstances.

I' m the same as Jiku. My dad read us books when we were todlers, he taught me how to read before school did, subscribed us to the local library and several magazines, and forbid TV after 9pm. So naturally I' ve read thousands of books.

I' ve had many friends who have never read any book for pleasure though (hell, one of them can barely read). Every book school ever threw at them was boring so they assumed reading is boring. I managed to convert a few of them though.

I barely read books anymore, just comics, but if I didn' t have the internet you can bet I would.

You have to keep in mind those are just wild guesses though. The estimations I found about France were 1/10 women but it' s a total asspull.

I did stumble upon something surprising though, remember Sweden ? Their number of reported rapes, as in actually reported, is 60 000 a year, which is up to 20 times the number reported in other european countries. Proportionally speaking that number makes them the second country in the world, right under Congo. They have it so bad some of their female students are wearing chastity belts !!! 82% of their women are afraid to go out at night, and their amount of gang rapes have increased by 377% between 1995 and 2006. I think that would explain why their politicians don' t dismiss the issue.

If memory serves triangle is now used both for launching a special and telling Donald and Goofy to attack. Problem is having Donald and Goofy attack decreases the combo count.

I didn' t care about reaching 100, all I wanted was the loot and it' s still easy enough to get it (reaching 30 or 40 already gives you a chance to get it).

If you want to reach 100 that badly I read there' s a way to get rid of Donald and Goofy (by getting them stuck behind a wall or something).

A bit of googling tells me it' s actually the most feminized of all the occidental countries, my bad. There' s no draft here, you have to volunteer. The people born the same year as me were the first generation who didn' t have to enlist, it was anounced shortly before I was supposed to enroll and I cannot tell you how thrilled I was to hear that. ^^

Anyway, there' s 15% of women in the French military. Israël has a mandatory draft for everyone so they' re closer to 50/50 (and yet I saw it described as one of the most feminized army in the world, not the most).

It does feel weird at first but I quickly ignore it if I' m hooked. Franco-belgian comics characters often have round noses, many Disney characters like Mickey only have four fingers, not to mention the weird animal fetish. Stylistics conventions vary between countries and none are a golden rule so, heh, whatever.

If you like T-RPG Final Fantasy Tactics is a must play. Tactics Ogre Let Us Cling Together and whichever Disgaea was released on the PSP are also fine.

Peacewalker is nice if you like Metal Gear, though the PS3 version is probably better (mostly because of the single, badly placed PSP analog stick).

If it' s not milking I don' t know what is. Not that I have anything against it, it makes up for planned obsolescence. My point was that, despite games like FF III&IV DS selling well, SE was obviously trying to occidentalize itself this last gen. The article I linked confirms it, they' re somehow still surprised to find out that an original old school game, made with Japan in mind, can be a hit here. They still haven' t left their insecurities behind.

Nomura' s surprise when he came to Paris recently and realized how popular KH is in France was also very telling. Like, seriously ?

So yeah, I' m glad to hear them say they' ll shift their focus back on core gamers from now on. And I hope it also means they' ll finally think of localization as an intrinsic part of the development cycle, not as a mere afterthought. It would be about damn time.

    Music

Ultimately the goal of art is to please its audience, period. Critics and elites can keep deciding what is or isn' t high art all day long, it won' t change that fact. Whether it has a deep message or not, whether it' s a marvel of chirurgical precision or not, if it didn' t move you it failed.

What kind of music do we call a guilty pleasure ? A music whose meaning and technique we know full well are craptastic and/or done to death ... and yet we enjoy it anyway, even though we' ve been told repeatedly we shouldn' t.

If the first one was a hit it is likely someone out there will want more of the same.

No way, moving into a new town makes me super angsty already. Overall I' m a man of habbit, I' d rather deal with the devil I know. And if the point is to become a hero, well, I have no desire for that whatsoever. I' m perfectly fine playing my part out of the spotlights.

Supposed to protect you, yet trained to kill. Protection might be exactly what he had in mind, that particular brand of cognitive dissonance isn' t rare.

Many people think "protect" is the keyword in "protect and serve". It' s actually "serve".

I thought the first Cap movie was the best of its rooster from a scenario standpoint (though its action was lame) and his next one seemed to have the most interesting premise of the second Marvel batch so I was looking forward to it.

However I just saw a review which was a real cold shower to me. Apparently the promise of a tongue in cheek comment on modern US war policies quickly gets thrown away in exchange for mindless blockbuster action (and that comes from a critic who wouldn' t describe the previous Marvel movies as that).

From a visual standpoint think confusing, nauseating "documentary" style shots.

And finally another problem I could already spot in the trailer (though I doubt most people here will give a flying **** about it) : all the supposedly French characters actually speak Quebequese (hello, not the same) and their acting is utterly sub-par (but then how would you notice unless you' re a native speaker yourself).

In short, lazy all around. Yikes.

    Sorry Nova

That' s probably because that' s not what I said. I raised the fact that those are luck based irl because you said otherwise.

The second half was me saying having a believable story in a video game is optional. Which doesn' t mean you shouldn' t do it at all, partially or not. Bonus points if your gameplay excentricities somehow become a narative tool on its own (that wall crammed with save points in SH2 for instance).

If you ask me the silliest story in the world won' t sink a good gameplay. However I' m not sure a good story, no matter how awesome, would suffice to salvage the worst gameplay ever.

The same could be said about movies, a good plot won' t save a horrendous execution (directing and acting), but a good execution can make the silliest plots fly.

    Sorry Nova

If horse races and football were a mathematical equation of skills and training rather than a complete matter of luck we wouldn' t organize bets around them. Just sayin'.

As for the kid/teenager wiping the floor with any war vet around while single-handedly saving the world, killing gods and somehow finding the time to win uber materias in a theme park, nevermind that huge meteor coming your way real fast, could not care less. I buy video games for their gameplay first and foremost. If you think adding some interactive fun just gets in the way of the believability of your little abortive attempt at writing a story you clearly picked the wrong media, **** that ****.

Just more milking, which didn' t prevent SE to make fewer and fewer purely turn based original games (and to strand them on handhelds).
This however gives me hope :
