My Review of the Hitman Movie

Bombs, Boobs, and Bullets

I've been a fan of Hitman since Contracts for the PS2, so when I saw the rumors for the movie on IGN in 2003, I was stoked. Four years later, I saw the first trailer and marked the release date on my calendar (though it would turn out to be moved back a few weeks). I can safely say the movie was what I expected it to be.

The movie opens with a flashback of the enigmatic Agent 47's training (to an underscore of the creepy Hitman Theme) under the Organization- a secret group that takes in orphaned children and trains them to be super assassins. From there, 47 gets into a whole mess with government scandals, INTERPOL, and his biggest challenge, a (hostage) girl, who spends more time flirting than cowering.

Now this story may seem a bit cookie-cutter, and in a few ways it is. But don't let the exterior fool you; the story is fairly deep. In fact the sheer level of confusion the story enduces is probably the biggest hampering factor for thie movie to be a classic. At the end of the movie, you'll walk out of the theater (or away from your computer monitor X_X) saying to yourself why the hell didn't so-and-so do this or that.

The factor that has always made Hitman an above-average stealth game was the sheer number of ways you could kill someone. The Hitman movie tries to stay true to this tradition with its several well-choreographed fight scenes which are actually very action-packed.

While the movie's plot is confusing, it fells like a true Hitman game story. Timothy Olyphant does a good job with the 47 persona, but no one can really capture his emotionless escence. And while the female protagonist's apperaing nude twice for two decently extended scenes must have had something to do with many of the sales, it captures the creepy yet adrenaline pulsing aura of Hitman.

CIA Agent Meet With Bin Laden 2 Months Before 9/11

The disclosures are known to come from French intelligence which is keen to reveal the ambiguous role of the CIA, and to restrain Washington from extending the war to Iraq and elsewhere.

Bin Laden is reported to have arrived in Dubai on July 4 from Quetta in Pakistan with his own personal doctor, nurse and four bodyguards, to be treated in the urology department. While there he was visited by several members of his family and Saudi personalities, and the CIA.

The CIA chief was seen in the lift, on his way to see Bin Laden, and later, it is alleged, boasted to friends about his contact. He was recalled to Washington soon afterwards.

Intelligence sources say that another CIA agent was also present; and that Bin Laden was also visited by Prince Turki al Faisal, then head of Saudi intelligence, who had long had links with the Taliban, and Bin Laden. Soon afterwards Turki resigned, and more recently he has publicly attacked him in an open letter: "You are a rotten seed, like the son of Noah".

The American hospital in Dubai emphatically denied that Bin Laden was a patient there.

Washington last night also denied the story.

Private planes owned by rich princes in the Gulf fly frequently between Quetta and the Emirates, often on luxurious "hunting trips" in territories sympathetic to Bin Laden. Other sources confirm that these hunting trips have provided opportunities for Saudi contacts with the Taliban and terrorists, since they first began in 1994.

Bin Laden has often been reported to be in poor health. Some accounts claim that he is suffering from Hepatitis C, and can expect to live for only two more years.

According to Le Figaro, last year he ordered a mobile dialysis machine to be delivered to his base at Kandahar in Afghanistan.

Whether the allegations about the Dubai meeting are confirmed or not, the wider leaks from the French secret service throw a worrying light on the rivalries and lack of coordination between intelligence agencies, both within the US and between western allies.

A familiar complaint of French intelligence is that collaboration with the Americans has been essentially one-way, with them happy to receive information while giving little in return.

U.S. CBO Estimates $2.4 Trillion Long-Term War Costs

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan could cost taxpayers a total of $2.4 trillion by 2017 when counting the huge interest costs because combat is being financed with borrowed money, according to a study released on Wednesday.

With President George W. Bush indicating a large contingent of U.S. troops likely will be engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan for many years to come, the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimated the total tab for the wars from 2001 through 2017.

CBO estimated that interest costs alone from 2001-2017 could total more than $700 billion.

So far, Congress has given Bush $604 billion for the two wars, with about $412 billion spent in Iraq, according to CBO, which is Congress' in-house budget analyst. In Iraq alone, the United States is spending about $11 billion a month, with costs escalating.

Bush is seeking another $196 billion for combat in Iraq and Afghanistan through September 30 and Congress is expected to debate that request over the next few months.

CBO estimated that between 2008 and 2017, the wars could cost slightly more than $1 trillion, assuming overall troop strength is cut to 75,000 by 2013.

Currently, there are about 170,000 U.S. troops in Iraq and another 26,000 in Afghanistan.

Finance charges for the money already spent on the war will total $415 billion from 2001 to 2017, according to CBO. For the next decade, "interest outlays would increase by a total of $290 billion over that 10-year period," CBO told the House Budget Committee, which is reviewing long-term war costs.

"To put it all on our credit cards with no accountability, with no plan to pay for it, I think is the height of irresponsibility," said Rep. James McGovern, a Massachusetts Democrat who serves on the budget panel and is an outspoken war critic. "It will be just one more toxic legacy of this disastrous war we will have to leave our kids to clean up."

Bush isn't SOOOO Bad of a President...

Let's face it- without oil, we are royally boned, so there's a good thing he fought for. And though I'm against this war, I'll admit that us backing down would send a green light message for Al-Quaeda. So even though he's made some bad decisions, and that during his terms the economy has dropped noticeably, he's had a few good calls.

Some scientists think they have figured out the real job of the troublesome and seemingly useless appendix: It produces and protects good germs for your gut.

That’s the theory from surgeons and immunologists at Duke University Medical School, published online in a scientific journal this week.

For generations the appendix has been dismissed as superfluous. Doctors figured it had no function. Surgeons removed them routinely. People live fine without them.

And when infected the appendix can turn deadly. It gets inflamed quickly and some people die if it isn’t removed in time. Two years ago, 321,000 Americans were hospitalized with appendicitis, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The function of the appendix seems related to the massive amount of bacteria populating the human digestive system, according to the study in the Journal of Theoretical Biology. There are more bacteria than human cells in the typical body. Most of it is good and helps digest food.

'A good safe house'
But sometimes the flora of bacteria in the intestines die or are purged. Diseases such as cholera or amoebic dysentery would clear the gut of useful bacteria. The appendix’s job is to reboot the digestive system in that case.

The appendix “acts as a good safe house for bacteria,” said Duke surgery professor Bill Parker, a study co-author. The location of the appendix — just below the normal one-way flow of food and germs in the large intestine in a sort of gut cul-de-sac — helps support the theory, he said.

Also, the worm-shaped organ outgrowth acts like a bacteria factory, cultivating the good germs, Parker said.

That use is not needed in a modern industrialized society, Parker said. If a person’s gut flora dies, they can usually repopulate it easily with germs they pick up from other people, he said. But before dense populations in modern times and during epidemics of cholera that affected a whole region, it wasn’t as easy to grow back that bacteria and the appendix came in handy.

In less developed countries, where the appendix may be still useful, the rate of appendicitis is lower than in the U.S., other studies have shown, Parker said.

The appendix, which is about two to four inches long, may be another case of an overly hygienic society triggering an overreaction by the body’s immune system, he said.Even though the appendix seems to have a function, people should still have them removed when they are inflamed because it could turn deadly, Parker said. About 300 to 400 Americans die of appendicitis each year, according to the CDC.

Five scientists not connected with the research said that the Duke theory makes sense and raises interesting questions.

The idea “seems by far the most likely” explanation for the function of the appendix, said Brandeis University biochemistry professor Douglas Theobald. “It makes evolutionary sense.”

The theory led Gary Huffnagle, a University of Michigan internal medicine and microbiology professor, to wonder about the value of another body part that is often yanked: “I’ll bet eventually we’ll find the same sort of thing with the tonsils.”

A Chicago woman who became enraged after discovering her longtime boyfriend's stash of pornography shot and killed him in their South Side home over the weekend, prosecutors said.

Jeanette Strowder, 58, is facing a first-degree murder charge in the Sunday shooting of Jesse Martin, 54, her boyfriend of about 15 years, police said.

Strowder and Martin had lived together in the 5300 block of South Shields Avenue for the last two years, prosecutors said at a hearing Tuesday at which Strowder was ordered held in lieu of $600,000 bail. On Sunday night, Strowder found CDs inside the home containing images of nude women and lost control, authorities said.

Prosecutors said Strowder gave a videotaped confession. She has no criminal history. Criminal Court Judge Raymond Myles set an Oct. 22 court date, said Andy Conklin, spokesman for the Cook County state's attorney's office.

World's First REAL Invisibility Cloak Invented

The world's first true invisibility cloak â€“ a device able to hide an object in the visible spectrum â€“ has been created by physicists in the US. But don't expect it to compete with stage magic tricks. So far it only works in two dimensions and on a tiny scale.

The new cloak, which is just 10 micrometres in diameter, guides rays of light around an object inside and releases them on the other side. The light waves appear to have moved in a straight line, so the cloak â€“ and any object inside â€“ appear invisible.

The cloak was built by a team led by Igor Smolyaninov at the University of Maryland, and borrows some ideas from the first theoretical design for an invisibility cloak, published by Vladimir Shalaev from Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana, US, earlier this year.

Their breakthrough comes just a year after US and British physicists created an invisibility cloak that worked in the microwave region of the electromagnetic spectrum. At that time, a visible light cloak was thought to be years away because of the much shorter wavelengths produced in the visible spectrum.

"At optical frequencies, [wavelengths] get very tiny, and the range of properties available from materials is limited," says John Pendry, a physicist at Imperial College London, and a member of the team that produced the microwave invisibility cloak.
Gold ripples

To get around this problem, Smolyaninov's team confine light to two dimensions. "The new cloak doesn't control the light you can see directly," explains Ulf Leonhardt, a physicist at the University of St Andrews, UK. "It's not the invisibility most people would imagine."

The Maryland researchers inject polarised cyan light into a gold surface using a tiny optical fibre with a fine tip. The light waves become converted into surface plasmons â€“ waves rippling through the electrons of the gold surface, effectively in two dimensions.

Three-dimensional invisibility cloaks would have to control light waves both magnetically and electronically to steer them around the hidden object. But two-dimensional surface plasmons are easier to direct, explains Pendry. "You can operate on either the electric or magnetic channel alone," he says.
Perfect cloak?

Smolyaninov's cloak consists of a two-dimensional pattern of concentric gold rings coated in a plastic called polymethyl methacrylate. The plastic and the gold each have different refractive properties, and bend plasmons in different directions. The whole arrangement lies flat on the gold surface mentioned above.

By varying the mix of metal and plastic in different areas of the cloak, Smolyaninov's team can control plasmons with enough precision to guide them around the cloak. A simple visual analogy might be river water flowing around a rock.

It is unlikely that the cloak is perfectly invisible, though, says Pendry. The Maryland team do not report whether plasmons can reflect off the surface of their cloak. If they can, an observer could still detect its presence, just as reflected light allows us to see a sheet of glass.

Smolyaninov's cloak is unlikely to be developed into a version that works in three dimensions. But Leonhardt says it could be useful in the near future. "It could be used on computer chips," he says. "You could use surface plasmons to communicate between different areas of a microchip."

Pendry agrees, saying they might replace fibre optics as a way to carry signals: "Light on a chip might seem more prosaic than an invisibility cloak, but in the end it might be more practically important."
