Never had any speed problems with XP and one gig of ram on my parent's laptop.
Honestly i like XP best. Vista and Mac's really just weren't good to me. I'd much rather keep the money and use it on something else and download linux for free. Linux is very good and it's free. It really shines for it being free. It's probably just as good as the Mac OS and Vista. It doesn't require much from your system and it's pretty stable it's not that compatible though.
Mac is seriously overpriced. Can't recommend it. Get a cheap laptop with a GB RAM any current core should be okay. They will do. If you can find one with XP go for it.
