The Dark Ages came as a side effect of the fall of Rome. He's telling you that conceptions change. The Old Testament was written in a very conservative and often violent time. The society of the Old Testament's authors bore little resemblance to modern society as we know it.

Most of the Bible was written during a time when people had a more savage mindset and much less understanding of the world around them; I don't find most of the Old Testament to be applicable to modern society. The New Testament, however, is much different. I can see people hating YHWH, but not Jesus.
