Well yeah they did exist. But they were very uncommon.
In order to be a Viking you had to be a Norse hunter or warrior.
The Norse civilazation existed in a time when it was weird to have a female warrior, so female Vikings had to do a Mulan or something :P

    I think there's a small misunderstanding...
The whole school laughed about it, not just his friends.
It doesn't matter that your friends have an appreciation for formality...

I remember when I was in my penultimate year of highschool a guy the year above me asked someone if they wanted to go to the school ball with them. She said only if he went down on one knee. He obliged.
And then everyone laughed about it until he left school.
Don't be that guy, please... for your own sake.

Well yeah it's true that he is different than Eccleston and Tennant because he's more reckless than the other two, this puts him and his friends in danger because he doesn't think things through and does things on instinct. Whereas Eccleston and Tennant were able to be more analytical. I believe that the reason why (in terms of the storyline not screenplay writers) this is the case is that when he came across those people at the finale of the end of time he got so scared that he regressed and became more alien.
It's because he's regressed that he needs to rely on the other people, which I think gives a bit more depth to the characters. The fact that he is more reckless fits in well with the darker themes, and the consequences behind every decision are fully explained.
In my opinon Smith is just as good as the previous two doctors because he grew on me to the point wherein the cliffhanger of the penultimate episode of season 5 has a sequence which shows the characters being in a sticky situation in slow-mo. When I saw the part which showed the doctor I actually whispered "No!" without thinking about it. Afterwards I laughed because I knew that they had done a great job for me to do that; Usualy the only reaction a film or television show will get from me is laughter. Only amazing acting can make me react in the way I did.
