I've only been to one, Animecon/Finncon a few years ago. It was a joint anime and sci-fi convention. I actually met George R.R. Martin there, I just had no idea who he was back then >.< Shame on me. I'd love to go to Comicon someday. Preferably as a part of a panel ;D
According to TvTropes (the most reliable source ever! After wikipedia of course) the mask supplies Bane with anesthetic/painkiller because of the wounds he got (put in spoiler bars just in case) Spoiler when he helped Talia escape. So basically he can't really feel pain at all unless the mask is broken.
