If having a serious long talk about your issues isn't being taken seriously, then threaten to cut him off completely. Both genres have evolved into something so diverse and broad, that you can hardly compete them against each other(although many still believe that metal is still a subgenre of rock). Though I prefer the more underground subgenres of metal (Such as Extreme, Black, Folk/Pagan, sometimes even deathcore) there are still a lot of untouchable alternative bands out there. I second this. Sonata Arctica is an amazing band.
