I REALLY doubt anybody would have fretted if Re:Coded lost a few cutscenes, they already said they added a tonne of stuff and it was planned to be a lot shorter, those animators could have been incorporating the capes

Well there's an excuse if I ever heard one

But I'm finally reaching the end of my level 15 Critical Mode run of Re:Coded
whenever I try any sort of challenge with KH games I always get a new understanding of how truly badly designed KH games. Stuff like "Let's give a boss that attacks you multiple times from random angles, but also make the actual attack faster than your dodge roll start up animation" things you don't notice when you can sponge damage.
On the other hand, being low level doesn't severely cripple your attack power, so unlike Days it wasn't THAT agonizing. Getting randomly killed at half health or higher from a bugged enemy was pretty obnoxious though (they seriously gave no thought in using the bug enhancements, most enemies with the speed bug can punish you for successfully hitting them, because their animations are so much faster than yours. Makes the avoid taking damage challenges in the System Sectors a lot more rough (though it's more likely that you'll just plain die))
This DID make the battle with Sora's Heartless WAY cooler though
Oh and DEAR JEBUS THOSE SPECIAL RUN AND GUN SECTIONS ARE HELL TAKING HIGH DAMAGE AND NOT BEING ABLE TO HEAL

Basically this. It's a sequel to Sonic and the Secret Rings, but they removed the motion controls for moving, you just use an analog stick now. It's pretty short, which got it a lot of flack from reviews, but the sword mechanics actually work really well with the speed based gameplay. As far as I'm concerned it has by far the most interesting plot in a Sonic game, too. It's also notable for being the first Sonic game since the classics to REALLY get multiple characters right. You can play as Shadow Knuckles and Blaze, and they have their unique abilities and different fighting styles, but at their core they still play like Sonic. They're ALSO completely optional, you can play as just Sonic if you want
It honestly kinda saddens me that Black Knight got awful reviews and didn't sell well, because while it was some wonky moments (usually involving motion controls) it was definitely a HUGE step in the right direction for Sonic... but none of the good ideas stuck because everybody decided the game would suck the moment they found out Sonic had a sword
(also using the homing attack in conjunction with the spin slash attack on a huge line of enemies is one of the most satisfying things in gaming as far as I'm concerned)

nonono, you're thinking of Sonic and the Dark Brotherhood, which is made by Bioware and just AWFUL. Black Knight is the one everybody immediately wrote off because Sonic had a sword but actually turned out pretty decent

Sonic and the Black Knight comes pretty close to that. The Sonic Boom game will probably be exactly that but it doesn't look like it's actually going to be very good
If being fun means being shallow then that's not much of a loss

The issue is you're operating under the assumption that I was answering your question, not saying that telling Carl and Elly's story was a terrible idea period

I agree with MOST of these... but KH I think would be a bit much. You either have to scroll through a menu or hold down multiple buttons to heal, and especially at that age they'd probably have to heal a lot

Right now Sonic has been the big winner with my 5.5 year old niece. Doesn't matter what game I put on, she loves it. It helps that most of the games are pretty simple to control. Something a lot of people tend to forget is that little kids tend to have little hands, so pressing a bunch of different buttons can be hard for them
If they liked princesses and stuff, I'm going to assume they like Disney princesses, so if you want to literally waste all of the money you'll ever have, you could invest in Disney Infinity
