I've always been an advocate for diversity in media. I believe representation should be across the board and everyone needs to relate to a character every now and then, not just when it comes to cultural or sexual identity, but even experiences. Strangely enough, I've rarely ever worried about my own representation. I don't know why, but I assume it's because I don't really embrace any kind of identity. I am who I am and I leave it at that. I've almost never even thought about how I relate to other characters. In fact, the only time I can think of is when someone has abandonment issues with a father in media and it strikes a bit closer to home, but even that's not entirely true since I'm the one who cut ties with my father, not the other way around. When it comes to cultural identity, as a Latino, I don't really relate to Latinx characters. I've always assumed it's because of how assimilated to a non-Latinx culture I am considering I grew up in the deep South. I'm extremely detached from any Hispanic culture, my Spanish is very lacking, I've only been to my family's homeland (Dominican Republic) as an infant and don't remember it, and I definitely pass off more as White than Latino, but I don't really identify with White either. When it comes to experiences, many people always assume The Big Bang Theory's characters are perfect for me when...they're just not? Regardless, it's never really bothered me and I'm comfortable where I fit and relating to characters when I do relate to them. And then came this: Touted as Disney's first Latina Princess, Elena of Avalor will be portrayed by a Dominican-American actress. Granted, Disney has said -in relation to another character of possible Latin heritage- that their characters don't have the same heritages as we have in the real world, but are instead inspired by them. So Elena may not be exactly Latina, but her culture is inspired from actual Latinx cultures. Her actress, Aimee Carrero, is Dominican-American (like me) and was born in the exact city my family hails from (Santo Domingo). For some reason, this has given me a whole new appreciation of representation. I haven't been able to identify exactly what it is about her character that strikes me (maybe it's the fact that even though she is supposed to be the Disney equivalent of Latina, she speaks in English due to, you know, Disney) but I now see myself in a character in a way that I rarely do (even if I am a man and the character isn't). What do you think is the significance of representation? Have you ever had a character presumably made to represent you but you didn't relate to them? Have you ever had a character that you suddenly found yourself relating to in a way you didn't expect?
My wife has been taking a birth control shot for about five years. It's the only kind she's taken. She gets it every three months. As far as I know, no medical professional actually said anything negative to her about it. Her family on the other hand was not happy because they said she didn't need it if we weren't having premarital sex (we were lol). Regardless of the main reason she takes it (to avoid pregnancy), she quickly discovered a huge benefit: it regulates her periods. If anything, I think that's become the main reason why she takes it. Even if -for whatever reason- we were never to have sex again, she'd still take it just for that. Every once in a while, she'll still get a bad cycle, but it's pretty rare. As for sterilization, she has kidney issues which may already prevent her from having kids (not confirmed, just a small possibility we're keeping in mind while she's learning the full extent of her issues) but she doesn't want any for a few more years. Even then, she's talked about not wanting to bring kids (especially mixed-race kids) in while the world is as crazy, dangerous, and hateful as it currently it is. That said, I don't think she'll actually consider sterilization given the option, but that's just how she is personally. I'm a fan of adopting, but I wouldn't be opposed to having a surrogate/freezing our sperm and eggs. I think -just like with abortion- it should be up to the woman. It is her body. Significant others should always be a part of the conversation, but they aren't the ones who are ultimately carrying it. If anything, any procedure related to this subject should be treated with education and not judgment; the doctor(s) should make sure the patient has all of the information and objective facts, but the decision is still the patient's. This doesn't affect me personally any as I'm a man, but that's just how I see it and what my experience with my wife is.
So I was reading a Bible verse (gasp, I know) when my dog barked at my cat. For such a small dog, he has a really deep and loud bark so it startled me. I started to yell his name (Gizmo) but I guess because I was mid-Bible verse, I yelled "Jesus!" at him instead. And he looked at me.
My wife was really excited when we saw the Sega one so I bought it for her. Half of the games were absolute crap (they weren't horrible, but they were pretty much the arcade mini-games), you couldn't save at all and the "wireless" controllers had about a two foot radius and had to be in direct line with the system. It was fun for...a day. The NES one looks better and I could use this for drinking with friends so...we'll probably get this.
I don't really Role-Play much these days, but I used to have this problem with starting posts with my own RPs so...+1.
