Because if it winds up being the case then it fundamentally alters how reality and existence will be perceived from then on. Yeah, there's no empirical evidence to support it, which is a big problem, but at this point it's as valid to discuss as any other philosophical thought experiment. It's the same reason why the theism debate has a degree of merit.[DOUBLEPOST=1400095902][/DOUBLEPOST]
Ah, I hear you. Fair, fair. Though the hypothesis that I think you're getting at (ancient aliens genetically splicing animals to make us or something) has literally no evidence in support of it. Not to imply that you necessarily believe in it.

I can get on board with that. I'm not any denomination of theist, but I can't help but feel some degree of human spirituality because of the interconnection of the matter and energy that makes up everything. (Everything that we can observe, at least. Cheeky dark matter pls go.)

Precisely. It's far from a proof, it's really just supporting evidence. I'd wager good money that we'll be extremely close to the answer if not already there within a decade or two.

We're getting there. There's still a lot of research to be done, but findings like these lead me to side with the nihilistic and, in my opinion, much more elegant model that shows our consciousnesses as an extension of our natural universe.[DOUBLEPOST=1400090732][/DOUBLEPOST]

We're not there yet, but we're getting there. Technology has been improving at an exponential rate since the invention of the first electronic computer (maybe even earlier; not too sure). As we improve our technology and our understanding of human consciouness, conscious AI will become all too possible.

Fair point. I hadn't thought of it that way. Honestly I have no retort to that.

    -2/10 Not even trying anymore.

During Luke's training on Dagobah he is undergoing an internal struggle; his current line of thinking is being challenged by Yoda's wisdom and he has to learn to accept it if he wants to succeed in his quest. Han and Leia go through a sincere albeit cliche romantic sequence that forces the both of them to forego their normal mindsets and try new things. None of them are super-duper amazingly deep characters, but they are certainly fleshed out.

We are approaching the point in our development as a species where we will most likely be able to develop a computer simulation in which conscious entities can be generated. If and when such an outcome is reached, the following question will be on the forefront: if we can simulate conscious entities, is it not likely that we are ourselves the product of some simulation?

    How do you respond?

0/10 Now I know you're trolling. Too obvious.

Star Wars the original was a bit linear, yeah, but it did everything absolutely perfectly. Mark Hamill played a perfect "I don't belong here, I'm destined for more." protagonist. Harrison Ford played a perfect badass, aloof wingman. The plot was fun and engaging, and Darth Vader had a truly menacing presnece that drove it forward. It was the JS Bach of adventure movies.

This is probably more along the "make you cry" path, but it's a beautiful song I just discovered recently. I hope it makes you feel in general to the extent that it made me feel.

Let's look at this scientifically. One is a classic, well written creative endeavor with strong characters, and the other is, well, Lightning Returns. Hmmmm. Tough one.

I can't believe this. To have utter disregard for the feelings of another race just because they're different. I thought you were better than this, KH-V. Clearly I was wrong.
