If I'm remembering the leaked script from way back when right, I think Ryuk and all the rules that came with him would probably have gotten in the way of their new story (where Light kills criminals to avenge his murdered mother[?] and gives up the notebook in the end). Seems they simplified the concepts to simplify Light's morals, and even though they would've had to put a new script together down the line, they probably wanted to keep it that way. There's never been official confirmation that that old script was real but afaik the evidence still points to it being legitimate. It was really, really bad imo
i have zero qualms with the death note casting at the moment to be honest; it all depends on the performances they turn in imo (not really familiar w/ most of their work). i'm actually pretty excited & like the choices so far (...and am shocked it is finally happening). hope it turns out.
