Yeah I accidentally clicked on your thread about it in the Spam Zone and when I realized what it was about I got the **** out of there. I don't want spoil anything for myself. also I'm a little frustrated that season five is sooo long. I liked being able breeze through a season in like a week but w/e it's so good I don't care.
I just didn't want to take the chance, I was more worried that someone else would have said something without realizing it honestly. I'm not very far in, just started really. I just watched the episode where Ice King tries to bring his Fionna and Cake fanfic to life. So episode 7 or 8 I think? the episodes reminded me how much i love Shelby

Shelby is awesome! I love that AT has such a varied cast of characters, some are in nearly every episode (like Finn and Jake) whereas others appear often (PB, BMO, Marceline, Ice King, etc.), and then ones that just pop up at the best of times (like Shelby). It keeps things interesting!

Exactly! There are so many fun characters so there's almost never a dull moment, even if important characters aren't involved. There aren't any characters I dislike (except Tree Trunks. I freakin hate Tree Trunks) because they're all entertaining. Though without question my favorite is BMO. I just watched the episode with cops and robbers and lost my mind at that lol. And Football. I watched that clip so many times. Shelby is a close second. That sense of humor is amazing. Who are your favorites? i'm guessing Marceline lol
I find it really funny that you hate Tree Trunks! I'm no huge fan of hers, but my sister also has this weird hostility towards TT and I have no idea where it came from.
But yes, Marceline and PB are undoubtedly my favorites. It's not just that I like to ship them (but I do), they're both such complex and nuanced characters that I love to see explored. PB in particularly is also just magnificently weird. I love Finn (and Jake) as I'm sure everyone does, I'm a bit of a sucker for good-doers. As for some of the smaller characters, I love Lady Rainicorn and LSP. Choose Goose, Susan Strong, and Lemongtab (x2) are also great.
I honestly don't know why I dislike her so much either lol. My friend loves Tree Trunks and I cannot figure out why. Everything about her is obnoxious. I think it has everything to do with the voice and attitude. Every time she's in an episode I immediately want to not watch it for some reason. Though that episode I talked about earlier wasn't hard to watch because Shelby and Ice King were there. I just do not find her funny. at all.
See, I say BMO and Shelby are my favorites, but then I remember how much I love PB for the exact reasons you said and it makes me question everything. Characters like BMO and Shelby are amazing from a purely comedic standpoint, where other character like PB, Marceline, and Ice King are great for more complex reasons, and it's hard to weigh those two categories against each other in a show as layerd as this. I used to find LSP unbearable, but now I think she's absolutely hysterical. Im indifferent to Jake. He's fun with Finn but on his own I don't care. Finn's great. I like how he can do these amazing things like fighting demons and whatnot despite being this seemingly normal kid. I had no opinion of Lady until the episode where Jake and Lady's babies were born. I really liked her in that for some reason. But yeah I could go on all day about the characters.
And oh man. Shipping in this show. I've never been a big fan of shipping, it's fun here and there, but this show has me going crazy for all the pairings. Like you said, PB and Marceline are great. I still don't know if I prefer those two over PB and Finn. As one could guess from my last username, the episode where PB was young makes it hard for me to prefer anything else. Though I will say PB and Marceline is becoming increasingly appealing for me. It broke my heart when you changed your avatar of those two lol. really sorry for this wall of text i just have so much to say
DO NOT APOLOGIZE FOR TALKIN' ADVENTURE TIME WITH ME yeah I do think TT is a bit bland and sometimes annoying (she speaks sooo slowly) but Apple Wedding is a really great episode. I might feel that way just because PB is in it though
And I hear you, obviously me liking Choose Goose is not really the same or even comparable to PB just because PB has depth whereas Choose Goose is just kinda a comic relief character. To be honest I would count Jake as more of a comic relief character than Finn or Marceline or PB, he has interesting episodes and I love him a lot but I'm not about to write an essay analyzing him either. And that's okay! It's great even, having a diverse and varied cast is important and even comic relief characters can be your favorites.
I actually used to find Ice King kinda annoying but I was afraid to admit it because people love him so. I just thought he was very repetitive. At some point that flipped though and now I adore him. It's strange but I'm glad it happened when it did, he's great in season five.
I do ship things a lot but I'm chill with them usually and I tend to favor canon. In the early seasons I did ship Finn and Bubblegum (especially in Too Young aw man) and I like that the show continues to give nods to it. I do think their relationship is fun to think about but it NOT happening is also important, not just to show that you can have a crush on someone that isn't necessarily reciprocated (PB has feelings for Finn but she won't act on them, at least not without ulterior motives) and go on being best friends but their characters were well developed from it. We see just how dedicated and self-sacrificial PB is and much of that lends itself to fan speculation about her relationship with Marceline. For Finn I think it kinda subverts the hero / princess trope, PB already did on her own of course but I do think it sends the message that ladies don't need to fall at your feet if you're nice to them or you're friends, that you're not entitled to a relationship etc etc. I do still find it cute though, the little hero boy with this crazy crush on PB, but I'm glad he has grown up and moved on (in some capacity)
PB A D MARCELINE THOUGH, I am so ****ed up over these two. There's an episode in season five that I think will set you over the edge with them, I won't say much about it but it is intense. Without getting into spoilers I just love the dynamic of their relationship, not just the angst, but that the two are basically polar opposites. PB is prim and proper and always puts her duty first, while Marceline flies around Ooo introducing herself as the vampire queen despite shirking her responsibilities to the nightosphere. Some stuff about PB's past is also revealed in season five which I won't get into but Marceline is really one of the few people (maybe the only) for whom she breaks down that barrier and shows a bit more of herself. Season five is really heavy on this stuff so it might sound crazy but YOU WILL SEE
Oh alright lol -- it's nice to be able to talk to someone about AT. The one person I know irl who watches the show isn't the type to understand/care about interesting and thoughtful character stuff, which is disappointing because he's missing the best aspect of the show.
I enjoyed Ice King from the start but it wasn't until later that I came to fully appreciate him. The person who voices him also voiced Starscream in TF Animated, who was also a pathetically comedic character (though slightly more threatening) and he does basically the same voice, which was enough for me to enjoy it on some level. And of course learning about Simon added a new layer to his character. While he's hilarious, he's also very tragic. Even as he's joking it's sad to see him as the Ice King knowing how benevolent and caring he once was. And the episodes with him and Marceline just rip my heart out.
TOO YOUNG. I'm still obsessed. "You so spice" still makes me shriek. Not necessarily for the ship but because it's like the cutest thing ever. While they are still my preferred ship atm, I find the way their relationship is handled to be incredibly nuanced. But yeah, I don't have anything else to add on their relationship, you hit every mark and I agree 100% lol. When Flame Princess was first introduced and they established a relationship I was still in that PBxFTH fanboy mode so I was raging pretty hard. Though a season later I'm totally with it. FP is integral to Finn's character and his relationship with PB. It's refreshing to see a character willing and able to move on and seek a genuine intimate relationship with someone else, and it's even more refreshing that that character isn't Marceline, the other leading female character.
I haven't seen any episodes that highlight PB and Marceline's relationship yet (at least that I remember) aside from What was Missing, which in itself is still amazing. Even though I haven't seen their relationship explored much yet, I enjoy the juxtaposition of their characters like you mentioned. It's played to great effect with Finn in the middle, seeing him interact with the two rather than the two always playing off of each other. Seeing PB and Marceline's relationship and Marceline and Simon's relationship is what I look forward to most in s5. That and seeing this setting explored, I think it's immensely fascinating. I watched Simon & Marcy today and ooooooh man that was incredible. It amazes me how dense some of these episodes are at only 10 minutes. Ugghh I wish I could say more on these topics but I haven't finished the season yet and don't want to say something way off! We're going to have to talk more whenever I finally finish the season, assuming I don't freak out at every major episode (which is entirely possible).
The only person I really talk to Adventure Time about is my sister, but I feel bad sometimes because (a) she introduced me to it and I'm like... flipping a **** about it and I don't want to make her feel like I'm taking one of her things? does that make sense? lol and (b) I am an English major so I am obsessed with symbolism and **** and there's a lot of it in AT, my sister picks up on a lot of it but some of it is totally weird and out there and I can only speculate on it but i don't want to make her feel dumb haha. Also I think she secretly suspects I may be a lesbian b/c of my Marceline & Peebles obsession which sometimes i question myself looool. not to say she would be uncomfortable with that or anything. But yeah I just don't want to overload her.
Ice King being tragic definitely did endear me to him, especially his song in I Remember You, I feel bad that he's so lonely. But I also think he just got CUTER at some point, he's no longer just kidnapping princesses but he's just kinda obsessed with Finn and Jake too because he wants to be best buds with them
YES I WAS SO GLAD THEY NEVER PURSUED THE MARCELINE/FINN THING, it just wouldn't have made sense for Marceline to be into him at all. Go With Me is one of my favorite episodes just because it's such great PLATONIC FRIEND RELATIONSHIP material, they're both just so bonkers (running around with wolves) and Marceline does kinda **** with Finn a lot, not to mention that she's SO MUCH older than him and has a lot of issues, I just can't get on board with that ship. I did like that Finn was all "it's been Marceline all along!!" though, I think it kinda hit that "not another teen movie" idea where the protag realizes they're in love with their friend. I love that it ended with Marceline just being all "uh yeah no lol" and Finn was totally okay with that, he's really just a kid who wanted to go to the movies and it got turned into this whole weird romantic thing that he maybe got swept up in.
I never know how to feel about Flame Princess though, my sister hates her so she filled my head with all these things before I got to the episodes. When I got to her relationship with Finn I wasn't all SHIP SHIP SHIP like I was with Finn and Peebles early on but I do think it was cute and I like where they've taken it in S5
Too Young is just such a great episode, honestly I love any episode with PB in it even if it's just a minor role (like in Apple Wedding), but even more so when it develops her. It's crazy how quickly the episode endears you to the Finn/young!PB ship even if you weren't feeling the couple before, they're just so sweet and innocent and adorable together and it makes you so happy (i also love when Finn is just all "cool I don't bathe" omg).
But then they take it further and just slam in yet again how devoted to her kingdom PB is, that she'd be willing to give up something as precious and special as her relationship with Finn to do what is "right" (and that Finn will support her!). And what's so great about AT is that they don't get overly sentimental with these things, because two seconds later PB calls Lemongrab a butt (one of my fave scenes).
I don't think the show is ever going to stop giving PB & Finn nods just because it was such an important part of the first few seasons and I think there's more to the relationship that either will admit -- Finn has obviously moved on but I think there is still a part of him that will keep trying with PB and it's not the prettiest thing but it's always funny. Peebles also really does have a soft spot for Finn too, I think, just because he's someone who unequivocally supports her no matter what she does (especially because PB can be shady as hell sometimes lol), which is a great contrast to Marceline, who constantly challenges PB's absolutism. And then there's just the memory of their days in Too Young -- PB is so responsible and dedicated that she can rarely ever relax and be free from the immense burden. I mean, hell, she went as far as creating a CLONE of herself when confronted with her own morality because she was afraid not of dying but what her death would mean for her kingdom. With Finn she was able to forget all of that momentarily and just have fun which she sorely needs sometimes.

Season 5 is such a strong season just because it really goes into a lot of the lore & backstory of the characters, you're right, it is ridiculous how much they can cram into just 10 minutes. Simon & Marcy is REMARKABLE, it's so great to see not just Marceline developed even more but also preventing Ice King from stagnating (and making him sympathetic). Season 6 will definitely be doing this too judging by the last few episodes of S5
& yeah if you have just reached Simon & Marcy you have a ways to go until the big PB/Marceline episode, I don't want to say the title just because I didn't know the episode was coming at all and I LOVED that. I can be stingy with spoilers just because I love being completely surprised and blown away on the first go through. You'll know when you reach it tho c;
It makes complete sense because I went through that exact thing. The same friend who only watches the show for the ridiculous comedy started watching the show long before I did but had only seen up to the second season. I hid that I was watching it from him so when I told him it was SURPRISE JUST FINISHED SEASON 4 followed by massive amounts of gushing. I could tell his reaction was a little stunned and hurt because I was adamant that I did not like the show (until I actually started watching it) so it seemed like I was intruding or something. oops.
Ice King's brand of comedy did change from repetition in obsessively trying to capture princesses to something more varied, to the point where episodes go by and I almost forget that capturing princesses is his thing. Something about him living and associating with penguins is hilarious to me. Like I just love how he lives with these penguins who he constantly verbally abuses while being very sweet to them at the same time. His bit in Five Short Graybles is hysterical for me. And the bit in Princess Monster Wife where he calls all of the penguins and they're all variations on Gunter with different vowels, I was literally rolling on the floor at that. Actually I think that episode is a great display of how the characters writing has shifted to less abrasive and more sympathetic, in keeping company of Finn and Jake throughout the episode, and the whole deal with the wife.
That's the exact episode I was going to mention actually lol. I love that they address the possibility of a relationship between the two but quickly establish that, no, that's not happening because their relationship is something very different. It speaks volumes of their ability to write characters of the opposite sex together without sexual tension. AAAH I LOVE THE WAY RELATIONSHIPS IN THIS SHOW ARE WRITTEN. Like I don't want to get on a soapbox or anything but I think people could learn a lot from this show and its characters.
I kinda don't care about FP. Like, that's just not a character that I have any investment in. I really like her relationship with Finn and what that means and all, but as an individual character I'm more or less indifferent. Though I did watch Vault of Bones yesterday and did like her in that, so maybe later in the season I'll come to like her more. The thing is I'm just not a big fan of nature vs. nurture stories or characters. They're alright and all but the whole deal with her fighting or embracing "evil" impulses isn't something I'm all that interested in.
Whenever I see PB is in an episode I get excited. Ngl sometimes when I don't feel like watching the next episode I'll skip through it to see if she's in it and if she is I'll watch it immediately. Don't care how minor she is in the episode, her being there at all is enough. I can't say enough good things about Too Young. I've watched it so many times just for all the little details or lines the two say that are way cute or hilarious. "I don't bathe" is great, I love how he says it so matter-of-factly. And that moment where they're sitting outside the window... omg. I love that the two entertain themselves by pranking Lemongrab. Ah man I could go on forever on this one episode. And yeah, "you're fired.. ya butt" is one of the best lines of the show period.
While I do like the responsibility she shows for the kingdom, I did feel a little betrayed by her moving on so quickly and the explanation they gave about how for her five years had passed, but that's just me shamelessly obsessing over the ship lol.
I think it's important that they keep the flirtatious element of their friendship present. It's a defining part of their relationship and emphasizes the dichotomy of Finn's relationship with PB and his relationship with Marceline, that being one of romantic history and one purely platonic like you said. Without that Finn becomes slightly less admirable for respecting PB's dedication to her people and not continuing his romantic pursuit and being resolute in this through having a relationship with FP or whoever else. And we even see how he is controlling these emotions in Burning Low when Jake mistakenly assumes PB is jealous of FP, causing these emotions to resurface with confused rage.
Aw man thanks for not telling me. I end up spoiling so much for myself accidentally. I love wikis. So like when I finish something I'll look it up and my eyes will wander and I'll learn things I shouldn't yet. This happened to me a lot when I first read One Piece. I've been doing pretty well avoiding this with Adventure Time, though. I want to avoid spoilers as much as I can with this show. I hope to finish s5 in time for the next season, not sure that will happen though lol. but man you got me so hype for that episode now, can't wait.
