The anime was following the manga pretty close (a little different but still quite similar) up until Alibaba gets bitten by the snake.

Yes! The manga is great! I began reading the manga when chapter 170 was released and honestly read up to that point in almost a day. Sucks you in! Kept me on the edge of my seat, so I couldn't stop reading XD It is really worth the read. If only the anime would stay with it! It would be a long and even more wonderful a series!
