Teridax wasn't sure what was in the realm of darkness and thought that there was shadows within that would try and drain the CPUs of their light. The barriers were then placed to protect their hearts from the darkness. The barriers repel most darkness with the exception of darkness that would be superstrong [stuff like boss Heartless, Maleifcent, etc]. If darkness of that magnitude happens to strike them then the barrier with break exposing their hearts for any Heartless or whatever to pounce and take it. Although IF has no barrier, she just stormed following the Goddesses who were in turn following Ichigo

okay I wanted to go on ahead and run this info by you. The spell that Teridax placed under the CPUs' hearts is not permanent, rather it just acts as a barrier that has to be broken through to get to their hearts
