I can see what Mephisto gained from it, but yeah, they never revisited the Loki thing, even though Loki himself said plainly "I owe you one for this" at the end. He meant it too, he made it clear that if Spider-Man ever needed a favour that he would get it. And he's the GOD of MISCHIEF. He could just screw with probability and force her to survive the gunshot that way.

Well, I can understand why they did it in-universe, but in meta, I agree. I get that they wanted a way to split Mary-Jane and Peter up, but didn't want to do have either of them flip out or something, but wouldn't it have been better if Peter had just been all "The strain of being Spider-Man is a big thing. I need to either stop being him." and then MJ be all "Nope, people need Spider-Man, even more than I need Peter Parker".
