The bravado that Kamina put on was just that; put on. Inside he was more afraid than Simon ever was, but he fought because he was doing it for Simon. Notice something about the glasses; he uses them when he's "The Mighty Kamina, leader of Team Dai-Gurren/Gurren", but not when he's just Kamina. It's a mask for him, he hides behind it in an attempt to inspire others. Spiral Power requires that one have the drive to push forward of their own volition and with their own strength, but Kamina always relied on Simon's strength to keep him going.
Kittan actually had somewhere in the middle. He had a genuine drive to push himself forward, but the problem was that he was also stuck in the past; when he and his sisters were close as anything. None of his sisters even went with them into space, not even Kiyal who could easily have used Kiyalunga. That's why he had to die; he simply didn't have enough of him in the now. Of course, the reason he gained so much at the end was because he decided that no matter whether his sisters were there or not, he would definitely protect the world they lived in, no matter what he had to do. That's what Spiral Power needs.

Trivia: Kamina had the smallest Spiral Power of all Team Dai-Gurren. It wasn't until he died from Tymilph's attack that his determination to help Simon anyway sent it skyrocketing, to the point where he was still able to operate despite being dead. So yeah, he wasn't "almost dead" or "revived", he was still dead when he used GDB.

The original is pretty rad though.
