Uh, there's actually no better town than Gran Soren xD. The equipment shop gets updated every few main quests. There's also a side quest later on that you can do to get more weapons/armor. The map is a bit smaller than Oblivion's map, but it would feel much bigger due to two reasons: Very limited fast travel and realistic world. You'll see what I mean later on, but I'm honestly very satisfied with the map.
You should save often. Like, after each fight. You'd be surprised how many times I was confident enough to escort someone somewhere far and then bam, world boss pops in and kills me. The game has some really strange difficulty spikes haha.
And oh, by new playthrough I meant NG+. Though NG+ is somewhat disappointing sadly :c

Pffff. Everyone's using my pawn :C You get her for free if you're on my friend's list xD. She's pure support though, so I guess that's why everyone likes her. But it does make the game waay too easy :v Unless you get one shotted or something.

Yeah I finished the game. But I'm doing my second playthrough because I want to go through a few things again, and experiment with more classes. I honestly love the game a lot. Yeah, it does have a lot of obvious flaws (bugs, blabbermouth Pawns, bad execution of the story) but dear god the positives make it worthwhile. It has the most amazing combat I've seen in a long time. If you want meaty attack, try going Assassin. You get your choice of Sword/bow/shield/daggers. c: Also, you should change vocations (classes) every once in a while. It makes things really fresh. I'd also urge you to take your time with the game, and not rush the main story.
Don't be afraid to ask me some questions if you need help. I had to learn several things the hard way and I had wished someone had told me about specific things in the game >__>
