For now it seems to be running alright. So long as I take things at a steady pace it's fine, and I can cope with the silly advertisements. Still, I might have to get AdAware or something to sort it.

Well I know for a fact it was lying, since the quick scan was at 0% still when it finished. Either way, blarg, the whole thing froze and I had to hard restart the laptop, so I'd have to do that all over again now.

That's only possible when you have a restore point to fall back on. My last restore point was when I got this laptop.

You assume incorrectly. As I said, Avast is failing me, as it's being very slow, and also not showing the percentage of completion. I already finished a "quick scan" anyway, which didn't help much, but the fact that there are advertisements sporadically placed on words in these posts (right now "downloaded" in my previous VM is linked to one), it's pretty obvious that it's there.

I believe it was a program I downloaded called "un-Rar for Windows". It is a genuine decompressing program, however, so I think that the virus would have just piggybacked on it, not been an intentional part of it. Either way, eliminating the source of the virus helps nobody, the virus itself is what needs burning.

Being infected by a virus, presumably.
