Basically:
Bastila is a Padawan. They figure out early on that she has the ability of Battle Meditation, which basically allows her to inspire her troops & to uninspire the opposing side, which turns out to be a trump card of sorts in battles. There are two Jedi Knights named Revan (unknown if it's his real name) and Alek.
The Mandalorian Wars erupt and the Jedi are forbid by the Council to go and fight; many Jedi do not agree with this, as people are being killed and the Republic is losing. Led by Revan and Alek, many Jedi went to battle to aid the Republic. Alek and Revan quickly rose the ranks of the military, and Revan was placed in charge of the Republic fleet. He is basically responsible for winning the Mandalorian War.

When Alek and Revan return, they do as Sith, Darth Revan and Darth Malak. They turn many to their cause, and begin the Jedi Civil War. Sometime has passed and Bastila is still a Padawan, and has been training her Battle Meditation. She is a part of a Jedi strike team that boards Revan's flagship in an effort to defeat him and stop the Civil War.

Malak, sensing the battle on Revan's ship, and feeling it is his time to surpass his master, fires on Revan's ship and knocks out basically the entire strike team & Revan. Bastila is injured by alive, preserves Revan's mind + body as he nears death, and brings him to the Jedi. They wipe his memory and give him a new identity.

So about 3/4 into the game, you find out you are Revan.

I never get sick of it, somehow. It's just fantastic.

Bastila is one of my favorite video game characters, actually. She is only a Padawan through the events of the game, which is pretty much the lowest rank for Jedi, aside from Hopeful, which is when they're first brought into the Order. And yeah, she's extremely arrogant. It's her fatal flaw, I guess you could say. She is special, with her Battle Meditation, but Jedi aren't supposed to be concerned about things like rank and renown. Bastila is. But she's also incredibly insecure and <3.

It might be out of a degree of self-projection on my part, but I just really relate to the character, haha.

It is probably my favorite game besides Kingdom Hearts. I think I've played it full through about five times now, but... asdfghjkl; I just love it so so so much.
KotOR II was enjoyable but not even close to as good. :c
