I wanted to discuss this matter for a long time now. So here it goes. You know games like WOW and guild wars. They're online. Many people (even me) believe that these games can make somebody so obsessed that they don't do anything then play the game. I read that people already died becouse of playing WOW, they didn't drink or eat anything just becouse they wanted to play. Do you think that online games can really make you so obsessed, that you don't have no other life than the online life

They could make you obsessed. Like this site does to me.

Online games are pretty addictive. I guess it's because you are playing with other people & making new friends. Didn't you see that episode of South Park, the WoW one? People who play it have no life. :p

People can be so drawn into the game that they can lose track of time & they wouldn't notice things like if they were hungry. I use to play online games a lot but i've given up playing just because they are so addictive, which isn't good. People are sometimes just so obsessed with online games.

people can get obsessed/addicted to almost anything. it makes them happy so they want to play it more, then they give themselves a goal to work towards. but the goal keeps changing and you get the 'oh ill just play one more level etc'. it can take over your life because it becomes so important to you.

but as with a lot of things it all depends on the person, some people just dont know when to stop.

    Online isn't THAT addictive.

See, this is why I LOVE Square Enix. They remind you to log off and go live. Right before you get into FFXI (the Online final fantasy) the have you agree not to sit there and be a lazy bum.

I'm on Odin (A FFXI "world" server) and the people there are awesome. Some fighting and leveling parties will take "food breaks" after so long so that the members of the party can go eat and visit the facilities, what have you.

It just goes to show that depending on your level of respect for yourself you'll tend to yourself more regularly then say people like someone I know who does EVERYTHING on the net and barely takes relaity breaks.

I'm not saying by any means that FF people are perfect. (Though I will go as far as to say differently intelligent) but I know a whole lot of people that say it takes a special breed to play WOW all the time.

I remember hearing about a similar case with Starcraft. Some guy in Korea played the game for a week without sleep, and didn't leave his room at all. He *tried* surviving on nothing but instant noodle and water, but collapsed when he got up to use the bathroom.

Yeah, it is true three people died from playing WoW. Two by no water, and one because he never slept due to the MMO. MMOs are pretty addictive and some people get so into them they think it's a form of life and htey don't need anything else but the MMO...

That's not necessarily true about ppl not having lives if they play online games. I mean I play like 3 different ones and I have a life. Same goes for my friends who plays just as much as I do.

Then again, there are some who really do throw their lives away for those games.

I remember we had a whole discussion about online gaming and addictions with a specialist, in our school. But alas, I wasn't really paying attention seeing as how I don't play games online.

But...yeah, I though have heard some pretty scary stories regarding WoW incidents.

The one part that I really don't get is how the parents don't do a single thing to help persuade/bring back their kid to reality. I mean we hear of all these WoW stories regarding kids not eating, sleeping, or ever leaving their room. But where were the parents when this happened? How come none of them seemed to take action? I really don't see how a parent won't notice this.

Again, it's also in how parents raise their kids. And the older I get, the shoddier parents are getting.

Yes, they do addict people. And yes, this IS the parent's fault.

People need to realize that there is a real world and a gaming world. You're supposed to spend more time in the real world than in this gaming world. It's not healthy.

Yeah some of these people are students away from home so the parents can't really do anything.
But for those younger players i think parents should intervene.

Jee...that's pretty sad man. I never heard of that one.

It's not about spending more time in one world than another, it's about self-control and knowing when to stop. :/ Kind of like alcohol and cigarettes.

I didn't KNOW they were in the their late 20's - 30's. I heard there were KIDS that died, not young adults. :/ Sheesh.

Why are you making so many threads about video games having negative impacts on people? <_<

And yeah, people can hurt themselves physically from online game addiction. They even made a program called OGA (online gamers anonymous).

    Not entirely.
Is there a law that says this? Video games are just as real as anything else in the world. Just because something is made out of pixels doesn't make it 'not real'. There's nothing that specifically says we should stay more in the 'real' world, because in my opinion, that's a bit of an oxymoron.

I think why the people that do become obssesed with these online/internet games have no other pleasure in their life. They are lonely and depressed and have no friends. So, they use the games to give something in their life. I mean, it's very obvious, but why get obssesed with a stupid old game? I mean, they are not that great and don't these people that play them have anything else to do that kill them own selves playing them? I mean, it's like, GET A FREAKIN' HOBBY, PEOPLE!!!!!!! (I'm not talking about you others, just the people that are obssesed with them and are sitting their aimlessly with nothing to do).
