It's just because for whatever reason the automerge didn't kick in. Usually the forum does automerge, but not always. It's just to prevent double posting.

I'm not too sure. Usually we only allow name changes after certain regulations are met (such as having 300 posts) but in your case the staff might make an exception since you apparently aren't a bot. You're better off talking to a supermod about this (purple names).
