It's more than likely he is able to do that with his own powers, not of his keyblade's
I think its because it isn't a true keyblade, like how Terra's doesn't have a keychain. Ven's or Aqua's keyblades don't either, therefore, they probably only the appearance of a keyblade while having the propreties of a regular sword.
